Hi, glad to see that this group exists!
I bought my IW40 (Maria) just the previous week and will make the voyage home from Kungshamn to Landskrona (Sweden) in the weekend if all goes as planned.
As I saw someone else wrote that the information from the shipyard is very limited and I have had the same experience.
Since I bought my boat an executive auction there is no history available and so I would be grateful if someone can help me date it.
Is there some register number puched in the hull or some other way of seeing it?
New sails have been ordered today and will arrive within the coming month :-)
Since the Swedish winter is coming there wont be much sailing this season so that will unfortunantely have to wait.
Hoping for a great sailing season in 2018!

Grateful for any info.
Kr. Michael

Hi Michael,

Welcome to our little group of IW40 sailors!

I hope you have a  safe “sail” to Landskrona.
I saw the advert from the auction. Do you have any sail for the trip or will you be motoring?

Regarding the hull number I have also been trying to find any, without luck.
My engine is from 1977 (MD21a/b) and the hull was said to be from 1978.

I´m situated in Råå not far from Landskrona so hope to hear from you soon.

GOOD SAILING

Hi Per

Good to hear that there is a "colleague" near by. Unfortunantely I have no sails yet so we will be motoring all the way :(

Let's hope the engine performs well all the way.

The shipyard in Kungshamn have checked the oil, the cooling and the charging and all seems to be working so we should be good to go.

The engine is probably the same as you have, I will take a closer look at all details once the boat is safe in Lundåkra harbour.

Perhaps I could visit you some day to have a look at your boat? There seems to be some details missing from mine.

Lets stay in touch!

Hi Michael,

If you have the same engine, the MD21, be aware that it is not safe to run above 3000 rpm
for any longer period.
I restrict myself to 2800 rpm as advised by many.
Apart from that I think it´s a good engine but of course old so there could be problems with spares.
You´re welcome to a visit.

Hi Per

Thank you for the feedback.
I took your advice and we lowered the rpm to just around 3000. (were running on 4000 prior to your mail)
What speed would you normally acheive (in average) on 2800 rpm?.

It would be great to visit your boat.
Could you perhaps e-mail me your number or give me a call on 0736-58 91 52 so we can arrange a time and place?

I beleive my boat is from 1975 since the label on the watertank says thats when they were pressure tested.

I detected some leakages around the entry hatch on the deck. Did you also have this problem?
Do you know the total volume of the 2 dieseltanks?
And are both tanks under the "Livingroom" compartment watertanks?
Do you know the volume?

Due to bad wheather we did not make it to Landskrona this weekend, the boat is now parked outside Gothenborg and I will go back in the weekend to complete the voyage.

You dont happen to have extra sails laying around? ;)

Hi Michael,

I believe you´ll be safer running the engine below 3000 rpm.

As you know it all depends on the ratio of the gearbox.

I know of an early IW40 that barely can reach 1800 rpm, and still manage 7,5 knots.
This gearing is probably not very clever, too much strain on the engine.

I´ll have to guess my boat will do just under 7 knots on 2800 rpm.

Unfortunately I also have some leakages.

Two fuel tanks below aft cabin bunks of 90 Litres each I think.

The water tanks were intended to keep 150 Litres in total but I´m sure mine are smaller,
and yes they´re in the saloon.

Regarding the sails, we can talk about it.
