I just opened iterm2 and it offered me to update, so I did. Then it asked me to backup my settings (which were in a custom location), which i did.
Now, I can't start iterm2, it just says "can't open program iterm2".

Arkadiy,

I had the same problem (other than being asked about settings).  I downloaded the most recent copy on the iterm website into my downloads file (didn't install it), ran it from downloads, used iTerm2->Check for Upgrades, and after that upgrade the installed copy in /Applications worked OK...

This is obviously less than optimal :-/

didn't work :( did as you said, it downloaded the new version, closed itself and couldn't be started again.
I guess i'll just redownload the old version again and won't update.

I had to restart the Mac,
Simply does not make sense but it did fix the issue.

FYI—this is a semi-common issue. My apologies.

Hi George,
Why is a reboot required, there should be some process I can kill?

thanks.

I think the OS caches something incorrectly. I don't know what component it is, though. Hopefully this issue will be gone after everyone is upgraded to 3.0 because the app name won't change again and we're on a newer version of Sparkle, the autoupdater, which has hopefully fixed this bug.

Some people report that creating a symlink from iTerm.app/Contents/MacOS/iTerm2 to iTerm.app/Contents/MacOS/iTerm fixes it, so you could try that.

No worries thank you very much George.

This affected me as well.

A heads up that a restart is required (although I don't read the fine print), or forcing a restart (probably not possible) would be a good improvement.

I was running a more recent overnight release of iTerm2 and a reboot was not required.  At most the user should be warned they _may_ need to reboot if iTerm doesn't restart but I would not want the updater to automatically reboot my system for me.
