Was going over some of the old Hawaiian newspaper collection, and found a relative who is mentioned in an announcement regarding an organization called the "Companions of the Fires, A.O.F." Circle 204 to be specific.

I'm presuming in one of those organizations like IDES. But, I'd never heard of them, having not lived in, or visited, Hawaii as of yet. Could someone give me a little more information? I tried Googling them. But, didn't come up with anything. Are they still around? If not, does anyone know if there's an archive of their membership files?

Thanks!

Robert

Guess there's no edit function in Google Groups.

That should be "COMPANIONS OF THE FOREST, A.O.F., CAMOES CIRCLE NO. 240"

It's fraternal organization much like the UPEC, or Elks or Moose lodge

Wiki pedia says

The Society was formed in Rochdale in August 1834, when over 300 branches of the Royal Foresters society (established in the 18th century) formed the new Ancient Order of Foresters.[3]

In 1874 the American and Canadian Foresters seceded from the Ancient Order of Foresters and set up the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF).[4] The IOF's UK operation is now called Forester Life, based in Bromley, Greater London.[5]

The society became incorporated on 1 January 2003, (in accordance with the provisions of The Friendly Societies Act 1992), and since this date they have taken over two smaller Friendly Societies, the first, in 2003 being the Tunstall Assurance Society, and then in 2005 the Leek Friendly Society.[2]

The society's local branches are termed Courts, rather than "Lodges" as in other friendly societies. They were named after the law courts of the royal forests, and performed the Ancient Ritual of the Society.[6] The most famous was Court LUD No. 10,100, which was formed in 1947, by members of the London District Management Committee. However, owing to lack of members willing to take office, this Court was closed in 2004.[7]

The society had its own magazine Foresters Miscellany which ran from 1862 to 2008, when it was incorporated into a replacement called The Forester.[8] The magazine is available on-line; it has been reduced in size and frequency, and only one edition has been produced in 2012.[9]

There are only two A.O.F. Courts remaining  in the US. Court Camoes 8110, Court Mauna Kea 8854 both in Hawaii. Was your relative a male or female?

The Ancient Order of Foresters was an offshoot of Freemasonry, much like
the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The first evidence of the existence
of a Court of Foresters is dated 1813. The Ancient Order of Foresters in
America, a.k.a. Foresters of America, provided sick, temporary relief, and
burial funds, and an endowment or insurance fund, not to exceed $2,000, for
the benefit of widows, children, or other representatives of deceased
members. Membership was confined to white men from eighteen to fifty years
of age, of good moral character, soundness of health and body, freedom from
disease, and a belief in a Supreme Being.
A not less important branch is the Companions of the Forest, membership in
which was confined to Foresters and women relatives and friends.
The Companions of the Forest of America was instituted June 1st, 1885 as a
National Women's Organization. It has been in continued existence since
that time. The Supreme Circle, which is the National Body, was established
in August 1887, with its principal office in Detroit, Michigan.
It was incorporated on December 3rd, 1906 under the laws of the State of
New York.
A Circle was and is a subordinate entity under local supervision, but
subject to the Laws and Constitution of the Supreme Circle.
The Companions of the Forest of America are essentially, in name and
practice, a fraternal, charitable and benevolent organization. The
activities are both social and benevolent as set out in their Constitution.
Their object is to promote sociability, sincerity and constancy to their
Members, and to comfort the sick and distressed Members of the Order. They
are a non-sectarian Organization.
There are no historical records available regarding any membership or
application papers.
