Dear friends
The State of Jammu & Kashmir is facing worst flood situation in last 60 years. When we were small children water had entered the vast ground (where now we have Stadium and Iqbal Garden) and almost entered our houses. This time situation is much worse with water level reaching more than 12 feet in many parts of Kashmir valley. As most old houses in the valley have kucha bricks (unburnt raw bricks) the chances of collapsing are real. My elder brother, bhabhi and Elder bhabi who are living in Srinagar had to shift to a nearby pucca house where more than 20 people have taken shelter with practically no food an water supply, phones dead and mobiles discharged because of disruption of electricity.
I am also worried about two of our members Prof. Abid Hussain Munshi and Dr. Anzar Kharoo and other friends in Kashmir. Any news about their welfare would be great relief. May be some one has update. We get very few news here in California, except messages from Relatives in India.

Yes Sir,

The situation as we can see through media is actually worse..for many young people, this may be a shocking surprise, as they might not have seen any floods in the area in their lives..

We can only extend our best wishes to people who are facing the situation bravely, and pray for immediate relief...no one can imagine the actual condition unless being a part of the same..
A huge work of restoration stands in front of rescuers and administration once the water recedes, I hope people of our country will lend every possible help to our brothers and sisters in the affected parts as they have been doing in past..
I cordially wish for safety of all our members and families from the area !!

Prof. Singh,
It seems situation in J&K has improved as the water level is going down. Our armed Forces are trying their best to help the people.
You might have got in touch with your brother and his family. Otherwise by now they might have got the help and will be safe. Hopefully our members Prof. Munshi and Dr. Kharoo and their family will also be safe.
With best wishes to you brother's family and all people there,
Promila

I have written to them through email. No reply till now. My son along with four cousins have flown to Kashmir to help in food supplies and medicine. My elder brother, his wife, my elder bhabi are stuck with 20 people more in a house in Balgarden, Srinagar Kashmir. The situation is really grim. Today they managed to go to the area in two army boats. With no evacuations started yet in this area (army concentrating in other worst affected areas) people are really frustrated. They started pelting stones on the boat, army wanted to play safe, so my son and cousins waded through 5.5 ft deep water for nearly 1 km to reach house, brought back elder bhabi. Others will be brought tomorrow. With no accommodation available they have been shifted to a Gurdwara near Airport.
With Lakhs of people still stranded, no information regarding our colleagues including Prof. Munshi and Anzar.

Prof. Singh,
Happy to know at least your family is traced and reaching to a safe place. Hope the other to members of our group and their families have also reached a safe place. For others whatever is possible is being done. Stone pelting trend won't help the people, it may delay the work and those who are doing it may also suffer.

Hopefully things are improving very fast..there is a great task ahead even after rescuing the last stranded person..
Pelting stones on the rescuers who are helping is not a solution,  this is a natural disaster and no one, but the poor luck can be blamed..
We prey for security and safety of our people and family members..

Just received an email from Mr. Anzar. They are all safe. All Kashmir valley was under water, but KU Campus was safe, even relief camp for many sufferers. Prof. Abid had left for Haj on August 28.
Our family and friends were evacuated by a team specially flown from Delhi consisting of my son and four cousins. Most are staying in relief camp in Barzulla Bagat Gurdwara. Our family has come back to Delhi. Here is link of experiences of my son and his cousins. Those who are on facebook can see.

Dear Dr Singh & Garg ji

Thanks for your concern in this hour of crisis.
I am safe now.
Prof Munshi fortunately had already left fot Haj Pilgrimage before floods.

Hope relatives of Dr Singh are rescued by now. in fact i've seen
myself still 3-5 feet water in Bal Garden area today.

Although water is now receeding slowly in Srinagar city but many vital
roads and localities still submerged.

Mobiles & internet restored partially after 10 days.
