Thank you for sharing. Of 32 species listed in BSI how do you determine the species?

Thank you Surajit for pointing me to this list. I guess we could begin by looking at the geographical distribution of the species and shortlist the ones for my area/altitude (advanced search on BSI page should work http://efloraindia.nic.in/efloraindia/viewAdvanceSearchPage.action, but somehow on my browser I couldn’t get it to work). Of course there could still be a few to choose from (Collett lists five from Shimla).

Following Collett, I thought the specimen I was seeing was closer to D. glabra but since I am a non-botanist too, I seek expert opinion on this. It is of course always possible too that an odd species from here is not well documented and hard to identify with the help of photographs.

Regards,
Ashwini

I do not know what your species might be.

Here is the type herb of D. glabra Roxb. in KEW - http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getImage.do?imageBarcode=K000098218 There are many other herb. as well, please search in KEW.

Dioscorea bulbifera L. (Dioscoreaceae)
Sec. Opsophyton Uline.
There are 4-5 varieties but for varietal identification flowers and tubers need to see.
It is commonly found and widespread species throughout the India.

I would very much appreciate to know which feature(s) in the attached images determine(s) the species, be it bulbifera or glabra.

I saw the flowers yesterday on one of the climbers (and am hoping that its is not a different Dioscorea species from the previous one). Does this correspond to the D. bulbifera? Please advise.

Thanks.
Ashwini

No, he confirmed that it was D. bulbifera. His reply was 'Yes' to my question. I had sent this mail in response to his reply which I do not see in the quoted text.

I have been seeing off late that lines from quotes are missing in threads sometimes.

I have noticed it too and have asked for advice here

but sometimes it works and sometimes not

But i discovered recently is if you reply in the email inbox  its iffy

but if you go to the group forum at https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en&fromgroups#!forum/indiantreepix

and reply in that page in your threads (or any body's thread) the quotations from all the previous replies shows up underneath your reply automatically , you dont have to choose anything

how 's that for inconsistencies that google cant seem to overcome

i had given my opinions when this process was in beta at least 10 to 12 years ago.. but the teams for forums and gmail seem to be different

it may also depend on when you started your gmail account..
in one of my oldest one it works
but not in the newer one!!!

I saw the first fruits today growing on the leaf axils and thought I’d share some images with you. I have been watching and photographing this climber flower through June and July.

Dioscorea bulbifera
June-August 2016
Mcleodganj and above.

Thanks.
