I've talked to several friends that are having trouble using the android app. One friend can't get any photos to attach to the observations and the observations never upload. I've never played with it, but I was wondering if it's working well for other folks.

Also, what's the status of this app? Are there any near future plans?

Hi Jonah - I'm in the same boat as you (I don't have an Android), so I
can't speak to the bugs you mention. But some of the features that
exist on the iPhone (geoprivacy, projects and additional fields,
adding photos from the library) don't yet exist. Some of these
features are being build and I'm hopeful to have another release of
that app in the next few months.

As far as I know it's working. If you have *specific* problems to
report, please include steps to replicate the issue, along with URLs
of problematic observations, OS and device version information,
network conditions at the time of attempted sync, etc.

I guess he just couldn't figure out how to sync the observations. I figured out that you have to pull down the notification bar to do so. It's not as clear as a button, but it works.

Just from an Android user's point of view:

The app simply MUST allow users to upload from their galleries. The reasons abound. My main reason is that I take a lot of underwater photos, so these will never make it to the site unless I have a laptop handy. Second is simply that people will use their cameras first, then post later. I highly recommend this function be built in soon.

I second the request for an Upload from Gallery feature. Often times I only use my Android camera when I spontaneously run into something interesting (e.g. a cool bug on the sidewalk when I don't have my real camera), and need to quickly snap a photo, rather than open up the iNat app, and then add the observation. It might just be that I need to change my behavior, but it would certainly make things easier. However, I can see how taking photos outisde of the app might reduce the geo-tagging accuracy, since I don't think Android photos are geo-tagged normally.

There are two other big issues that I also see with the android app:
1) There is no way to link the observation with the correct species
2) The synchronize setting is hidden in the menus of the phone isn't readily obvious to users. Also if there is disruption to the synchronization, the app won't say that you need to resynchronize in till you add another observation.
