Hi. Is it possible to bulk download species locality and observation data? I am compiling all museum and observation records of a SW amphibian species in order to design a inter-agency monitoring project. The records I am trying to access provide Lat-Long but the Geoprivacy is obscured. We need specific locality data to properly implement 2018 survey efforts, which is part of a range wide population status evaluation. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I can provide further project details in private correspondence.

Sincerely,
Mason

Hi, I am also struggling with this, any help much appreciated -- being able to download a .shp, .kml or even just a .csv would be very useful. I am interested in downloading all the observations of a specific genus in a county.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey guys,

Anyone can download a CSV or KML file of a set of observations by going to the Observations Search page and using the filters to get a set of observations you'd like. At the bottom of the Filters menu you'll see the option to download the data as a CSV, KML or Atom:

There are a few caveats, however:
  • By default, Observation Search only shows verifiable observations; verifiable means the observation has a date, location, and photo or audio evidence. You can un-check Verifiable in the Filters menu if you want.
  • You can't download the true coordinates of obscured or private locations. To access those true coordinates, you'll have to start a project and have users submit their observations to the project (or you can add them one at a time) and allow you permission to see the true coordinates of the observation. You can then download a CSV or KML from the project. Or you can contact users directly and ask them to share the true coordinates.
If you have questions you'd like to keep private, you can email us at he...@inaturalist.org.

Thanks this is super helpful. Unfortunately, I'm still having difficulty -- I am able to download the KMLs, but I am still only receiving a subset of the observations that come up with the initial search. For instance, I was looking as a test run for angiosperms in Santa Clara County, CA. I unchecked verifiable, then pressed download, and that yield only a handful of observations instead of 21,203 observations...I must be missing something?

Steve, can you copy and paste the URL of the search you're using?

Hi! Did this ever get sorted out? I think I'm experiencing a similar problem and also am curious if I'm just missing something.

When I tried to download all of the honey bee observation from 2017 (massive, I know.  Should be around 8500 records) (q=apis+mellifera&quality_grade=research&identifications=any&iconic_taxa%5B%5D=Insecta&hrank=species&verifiable=true&d1=2017-01-01&d2=2017-12-31) and open it up in google earth, only 30 records show up, and it's not clear what those 30 even have in common given the spread in geography, time of year, and contributors.

Thanks for any advice!
Misha
