Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice - I'm just finishing off my Prusa (at last) and wiring up the J-Head (purchased from the awesome openhardware guys). Is there any alternative to Kapton tape for insulating the components on the nozzle? I've got zero experience with high temperature electronics, but also struggling to find Kapton (and interested in cheaper options if there are any). I'm fairly sure using regular insulating tape would be a bad idea attached to the nozzle, but would something like that work if the wires were wrapped and held away from the brass?

RS (za.rs-online.com) has (usually local) else if you can live with a 6 week wait: dx.com

Pressed send before i was done lol

-  Insulation tape will never work.  Heat rising from print, from heatbed, plus the resistor leads get hot all the way to the tip, some of the wire too.  Kapton pretty much the only option.

And you need a roll anyway, regular maintenance, patching printbed, etc - so dont think a 33m roll is a waste if you need 2m for the hotend max

Cheers all, will put an order in with RS. Seems like the sensible thing to do.

ManTech also have some...

In some places, PTFE sleeving makes sense, but you'll still need some tape.... (PTFE heatshrink also exist...)

For a print surface, several alternatives exists... From wood glue solutions, PET / Polyester tape (for any tape used for ABS, ensure that it has a HIGH temperature rating...) (Silicone adhesive...), hair spray, etc...

Some RS links:
PTFE sleeves: http://goo.gl/xAx39
PTFE heatshrink: http://goo.gl/QztjI
Non-messy high-temp cable: http://goo.gl/TbU3y
Other high-temp cable: http://goo.gl/eSSgB
Tapes to try as print surfaces: http://goo.gl/8O5bU (PET and Kapton) (PET tapes also found elsewhere.... Kapton - see below...)
Kapton tape:
Look under insulation tape, try search for high temp ratings... Also search for these 3M parts (paramters are unfilled in many cases...): 5413, 5419, SCOTCH 92,
Hi-Bond HB830

Random note:
For the heater resistor, I recommend attaching it using a mechanism similar to this: http://www.makergear.com/pages/stepper-plastruder-instructions-heatcore (for a resistor, just using femal crimp pins work fine...) It keeps it from self-desoldering...

That's awesome - I mailed them the other day to see when the shop was going back online. Now I know why they didn't reply! :)
