Our church is selling our Handbells.  We are asking $5,000 for all three cases.  We would prefer not to separate them.
Case A - 1st Octave C5-C6
Case B - 2nd Octave G4-B4 & C#6-G6
Case C - 3rd Octave C4-F#4 & G#6-C7

Polishing cloths, mallets, and soft brush in cases.
3 crates of handbell music.

These have been stored in our church's closet for several years.  They worked great the last time we used them, but they probably need some TLC by now.  The cases are in great shape.

Come pick them up or arrange transport.  We're in Houston, Texas.

Our church has at least 4 feet of water in it, and the street is still rising - and the cases of bells are on the choir library floor.  So...  Is anyone interested in giving me a price for individual bells, well dried (once we can get to them)?  I expect the cases will be ruined.  :-(  Hopefully the bells won't be too tarnished.

Marylyn –

Contact Jean Darby at www.bellfixer.com for information on bells like this. She handled a church’s bells from the tornado in Joplin, MO. There are pictures of those bells on the website. The water did a number on their bells and she was able to fix some but I believe the bulk were ruined. L

Marylyn,

I know this is not possible right now, and y'all have other things to
worry about that are more important, but if they are dried before parts
corrode, the bells may be fine. Yes, the cases will probably be ruined.
The main thing would be to get them out of the cases and all the parts
dried (especially the parts of the clapper mechanism) as soon as you can
get them out of the water. I have a set of bells that survived Ike in
Galveston, but they sat in wet cases for a long time after the storm and
the castings suffered, along with the clapper screws. They still sound
pretty good, but they'll never be quite right...

Marylyn,

I just sent you an email at your private email address, in case you don’t get it here is some info for you.  I have done many refurbishment jobs due to floods for my customers around the country.  Please contact me directly once you know more about the situation there/condition of the bells.

I hope and pray you and others are safe there!

Sincerely,

Neil Gertner

Thank you all!  We can't get into the church yet... the street is near the reservoirs that were opened to relieve pressure so they didn't spill over uncontrollably.  Unfortunately, this means that the people who live near the bayou that the reservoirs drain into are being flooded.  This area has NEVER EVER EVER flooded...  the bayou is in a 60 foot deep ditch normally.  Right now that ditch is not only full, but is flooding over for several blocks, in a lot of cases past the 2nd floor of homes.  The reservoirs have crested and the corps of engineers is reducing the outflow, but we don't know when the water will recede enough to get in.  Right now we can only get there by boat.  (And our church is immediately next to the widest freeway in the world! )

As soon as we can get in, I'll grab the bells and bring them home to dry, and we'll take it from there.  I'll let you know how they end up.

Marilyn – one thing for you to check before you actually sell them:  Are they insured by the church?  It would be worth checking if you can make a claim before you sell them.

With prayers that life returns to normal for you and your fellow Houstonians as quickly a possible,

Silver

I doubt they are insured, except for being part of the property.  We seriously haven't used them for a good 15 years.  I think most people have forgotten we even have them.

when the bells get this wet. . .usually the recommendation is that the cases get discarded and all the inside bell parts get discarded and replaced. . . If caught early. . the castings can be polished up beautifully. . .  I would contact Christine Anderson. . . she has a wonderful technique of cleaning the castings in the dishwasher!!

Never mind this set...  Our church has at least 3 feet of water in it, and the bells are sitting in their cases on the choir library floor.  I am assuming the cases will be mildewy by the time we can get back in there.  Anyone want to give me a price on soggy uncased handbells?  (Whenever the water goes down... the street is still rising...  could be a while.)

So sorry you all are having to go through this.  How sad for your congregation - I'm sure you've suffered a lot of damage throughout your facility.  The cases and supplies are probably done, but the bells should be salvageable.  Let us know when things are looking up.  I'm sure someone will want the bells.  Best of luck!

Our house is fine, but we have lots of friends from church who are still waiting for the water to go down so they can get back into their homes.  It's been awful.  :-(  This part of town NEVER EVER floods!  The bayou that the reservoirs drain into is in a channel that is 60 feet deep and probably twice that wide.  There's a beautiful hike-and-bike path that goes along it.  Usually we call it "Terry Hershey Park" and don't wonder about why they made it so deep.  Now it is not only full, but overflowing for multiple blocks all around it, and they are still letting water out of the reservoirs because there is still water coming from the rivers that flooded upstream.

Thank you for the prayers!!!  Houston (and surrounding areas) definitely both needs them and feels them.  Today our pastor said, "When we see the waters, we're afraid (Matt 8:25). When the waters see God, they're afraid (Ps 77:16). Like a Chuck Norris joke, but true."  :-)

I hope that your church is now in recovery stages and not still under water.

Thoughts to you

Thank you!!  The flooding is finally gone, and the remediation process started this weekend.  I was able to get the bells out of their cases (which were fuzzy on the outside and slimy on the inside... sooo gross!), rinsed them off with clean water, wrapped them in leftover children's choir shirts (seemed appropriate), and brought them home in empty clean kitty litter buckets (I'm always glad to find something good to use those for!)  There is a handbell organization in town that is going to refurbish them for free and give us some replacement cases.  :-)  We are so grateful!

That is awesome. That is Stevie Berryman's group doing this. The handbell community is wonderful. So glad this is sounding like a great outcome. Nice you had those kitty liter buckets.
