1945 Airone red paint code/colour

Would appreciate  this info. It's the brighter red not the amarrante used on 30's models. I believe the Falcone of the period used the same. As I'm UK based would appreciate a local source.

The mahindra tractor red is VERY close. Especially if you’re doing a complete repaint, keep in mind the Guzzi red varied from batch to batch from the factory.  I did find that lower cost bikes like the cardelino and zigolo did have a different red color. More towards “red oxide primer” I suspect because it is a much cheaper red with better coverage???

I think the earlier the bike the more ‘iron oxide primer’ colour they tended to be. Intense reds were not common in the 1940s and even 1950s. They faded badly in sunlight. Even the ‘rosso corsa’ of  Ferraris and Maseratis from that period tends more to the amaranth.  If Guzzinos and Cardelinos seem more often to be amaranth it’s maybe because they are low value bikes and have not so often been ‘restored’ in recent decades, inevitably in too bright red.  Here’s a couple of Guzzinos one in rusty red and the nearest one (mine) in a wrong repaint. Also a ‘48 Airone which I’m sure was repainted but a nice compromise.

Thanks for reply Andrew. I take on board the fading issue with red. My bike appears to have been restored prior to 2013 when it was imported from Italy. As you suggest likely a brighter red than ex factory in 1945 although it does have similar red colour to your Airone. Just need near match for touching up at the moment. Certainly the rosso corsa I have for my car is noticeably  lighter. Will keep looking.

I used Ford Colorado Red for painting my Stornello, a nice bright red and easily available in spray and touch up pens.  I painted the whole bike so had nothing to match it to.

The correct paint is Lechler code GUZ A17 and if restored in Italy they probably used Lechler anyway as it is easy to obtain there.

AIRONE 1939-57 MONOCROMATICA ROSSO CARMINIO 14 GUZ A17

A really, really, good match for you in the UK is Rover 1278 Solar Red which I have had used on one of my Falcones.

However your best bet is to take one of the panels, maybe even the tank, down to a good quality automotive paint shop and get them to scan a colour match and they will mix you a cellulose spray can for about £20.

They say that 40% of men are color blind in the red brown spectrum. LOL!

And red is probably the worst color when it comes to fading!

I would never restore this bike though it could use a good cleaning and oil bath as the Britts would say.
