Hey there,

Linux distribution: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
Installed grgsm with pybombs. Installation went fine.
gnuradio version:v3.7.10.1
Hardware in use: HAK5 SDR kit (USB dongle) it's RTL-SDR. right?

Kindly help me out with this issue. Bugging me for three days.
Wireshark is unable to capture gsmtap packets whenever I run grgsm_livemon through the terminal (fig1 attached). Although the livemon window open and shows the data spikes when set to desired frequency but no result in wireshark.  Second error I encounter is that when I start gsm_capture, I got usb_claim_interface error -6 (fig2 attached). The cfile is visible in home directory but i really don't know whether it's being filled with gsm data or not. Similarly when i decode it using grgsm_decode, nothing happens!

I tried the solution (enabling the usb for non root users) in which i created a symlink in /etc/udev/rules.d with name foo.rules and copy pasted the following:
SUBSYSTEM==”usb”, ATTRS{idVendor}==”0bda”, ATTRS{idProduct}==”2838″, GROUP=”adm”, MODE=”0666″, SYMLINK+=”rtl_sdr”

I have entered my product id and vendor id by verifying it through lsusb. But i couldn't reach the solution yet. Please help me out. I ran the complete setup with success few days ago but now its creating issues.

Thanks in adanvce

or remove and plug back your device and then try to run sudo wireshark -k -f udp -Y gsmtap -i lo
 ,and grgsm_livemon

Make sure you're monitoring the loopback interface

127.0.0.1

Second error I encounter is that when I start /gsm_capture/,

You should blacklist the rtl dongle by adding the enclosed file

/etc/modprobe.d/rtl-blacklist.conf

Remove the symlink and any files you added to /etc/udev/rules.d.

Add the enclosed file

/etc/udev/rules.d/rtl-sdr.rules

Add yourself to the groups

usb
wireshark

Type

groups

to verify you've been added. Note, need to logout and login to update
your groups.

Also, I'd recommend installing

gqrx

with pybombs.

Thanks for the detailed response. I tried your solution (except the gqrx installation) however the error persist. Same error. Can you tell me briefly how would i get benefit with gqrx? whats the role of gqrx in whole thing? can you enclose the link of gqrx installation with pybombs?   i have found this link https://github.com/csete/gqrx  but its manual installation i guess..

Reboot the machine.

And note, you can't run two process at the same time which require
access to the dongle - otherwise you'll see the error you're seeing.

Can you tell me

It turns your dongle into a spectrum analyzer.

And it gives you an independent method to debug your problem.

Assuming you installed grgsm with pybombs, I would guess it's the same
syntax

pybombs gqrx

I've never used pybombs.

The rtl_test indicates there's a PLL problem.

Typically this means the receiver has to much noise and can't lock onto
the signal.

Maybe the dongle and antenna are to close to the computer - or the
signal is just to weak.

Or maybe it's a bad antenna - or the wrong antenna for your environment.

If it's a quarter wave antenna (typically come with the rtl dongle) then
maybe it doesn't a sufficient grounding plane. Put a huge of metal under
it - but keep it as far away from the computer as you can.

Try a different USB port.

In install gqrx and see if you have trouble listening to a different
frequency - say a wideband FM station.
