Things are just not going well here!

After the issues reported earlier around the config files and getting the Cloud-IQ to start and stop nicely I re-installed Ubuntu and went through the install process as detailed here.

Now the Cloud-IQ won't start at all, I get this every time:

Loading configuration from: "/home/michael/.config/gqrx/default.conf"
Configuration file: "/home/michael/.config/gqrx/default.conf"
gr-osmosdr 0.1.4 (0.1.4) gnuradio 3.7.9
built-in source types: file osmosdr fcd rtl rtl_tcp uhd miri hackrf bladerf rfspace airspy redpitaya
Using
New antenna selected: ""
New antenna selected: "RX"
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error'
  what():  get_gain failed
Aborted (core dumped)

I noticed a lot of errors in the last installation around the "what(): get_gain failed" errors.  Does anyone know what this means from a practical point of view?

Thanks,
Michael

I assume that Gqrx loads up ok and it only crashes when you "start" the sampling via the button?  To me, it seems you've configured something into ~/.config/gqrx/default.conf that is throwing off Gqrx.  Try moving that conf file and reconfigure things and see if things begin to run again.   If it continues to fail, maybe you can provide a backtrace of the Gqrx core file to understand more what's breaking:

Include that output to this thread

Sometimes, the driver has difficulties establishing a connection
within 5 seconds, where after the Cloud-IQ closes the connection. The
empty "Using" line tells us that gqrx has started up without any
device connected. Normally, the line would read something like:

Using RFSPACE CloudIQ SN CI000018 BOOT 3 FW 13 HW 2 FPGA 1/6

So far I haven't found out why this happens. If you restart gqrx 5-10
times it should eventually connect and stay stable. Try restarting
gqrx a few time and just answer "No" to editing the configuration
(assuming that you have selected the Cloud-IQ the first time).

I so wanted Linux to work for me.  I've been trying Linux for a few years but the problems with getting consistency in starting, configuring and maintaining a working OS is so fraught with fish hooks it just isn't worth my while.  I'm sorry Alex, I've tried GQRx and found initially it was not compatible with Ubuntu 16 so I reformatted my partition and installed Ubuntu 14.  Installation went well and initially GQRx showed better behaviour on first starting and found the Cloud-IQ straight off and I was listening.  So I set about configuring the FFT and receiver settings, creating a few bookmarks and then went to save the settings and as soon as I hit Save a new GQRx window popped up and the old one froze in the background.  So I turned off the active app and closed the inactive one and restarted GQRx.  Config file error, back to square one and start all over.  When it was running I noticed that "Top" showed GQRx at 300% CPU!!!!  It was becoming ground hog day very time I started GQRx.

So I thought I'd try the RTL-SDR that I have attached to the computer, that was a fail despite no errors on installation (RTL-SDR worked OK on Ubuntu 16 funny enough) with something along the lines of "Device found but no dev rules" or something but no useful information on how to fix it.  Had I installed the RTL-SDR software and driver individually I would have known how to fix the issue as the build directory would be in my local system.

Oh well, back to Win10 and SpectraVue.

Oh and one last thing that really told me Linux is not going far these days is that I installed Chromium browser but do you think I could find out how to start it!  There's no "Menu" option, the installed software manager just tells me what's installed and not how to start it!  So all I'm left with is what's on the Launcher and no way of starting anything else unless I'm privvy to knowing where in the myriad of folders the binary is stored.

I can't say I've enjoyed my experience which is a shame, I really liked the GQRx interface and tools.

Michael:

Try clicking on the Ubuntu Icon on the launcher then on the "A" Icon at the bottom of the next screen. This should show you all the installed apps which can be launched from there or drug to the Launcher.

Gqrx runs great for me under Ubuntu 14.04.3LTS.

Hi Alex,

Here's the full story of the issues I'm having, maybe you can see something I can't:

Start Linux 14.04

Delete .config/gqrx/default.conf

Start gqrx from Launcher

Configure I/O devices dialogue opens

Change device to "RFSpace Cloud-IQ Receiver"

Change Device String to "cloudiq=192.168.1.28:50000"

Change Input rate to "614400"

Leave remainder as default

Click OK

Receiver "clicks" into life and gqrx GUI opens

Click Start DSP button

No activity except the signal meter shows green to 0dbFS

Click Stop DSP and after 15 seconds the GUI goes to grayscale

Click the window Close button and a dialogue opens saying "This window is not responding"

Click "Force Quit"

Open a Terminal

Type gqrx

Picking up this thread, stumbled in here from the Google search for gqrx and  "what():  get_gain failed" errors.

I too have this issue with Cloud-IQ and GQRX, was there ever a workaround or fix discovered? Any suggestions would be welcome.

I'll be happy to post logs or output.

Currently this is the output when I load gqrx. I'm prompted to choose the radio - the config seems to keep the correct address of my cloudIQ and I can hear it engage the radio but it never produces the full gqrx interface (when launching from shortcut nor commandline) and eventually I see this:

Unfortunately I have been too busy with other things to look at this
issue so there has been no progress :-(

I will try to take a new look at this shortly.

Hi Alex, I have sold my Cloud-IQ so this not a problem until there is some support for the Elad FDM S2 and by the looks of the Elad website I'm not sure about this for GQRX.

Cheers,
Michael

I have good news for Cloud-IQ owners -- I have found the error in the
driver and I will be able to include a workaround in the binary
packages for the 2.6 release :-)

Hi

I am experiencing something close to this. I have an NetSDR and an SDR-IP. The issue occurs with both of them.

What happens is that I start the DSP with either netSDR pr SDR-IP, and I see nothing on the waterfall, just as described above.
When I try and stop the DSP, the application often hangs, but sometimes it does respond.

When I run a tcpdump, I do see the IQ samples arriving at the PC from both RFSpace types.

I connect to the linux host remotely via X2go or no machine.

I start the application:
