I've just installed GPS essentials on my new phone as it was fantastic on the old one BUT, I can't get it to track. I've checked that satellites are visible (6 or 7 in fact) but zero are used for a fix.  I'm in Northern France and I'm not sure if there is something that I've missed in settings (position datum?)

Hopefully someone can help me!

The datum will only affect the location values, you will not get quicker fixes with a different datum.

If you started GPS at a remote location without network connection it may take up to 20 minutes to find the first fix. This is because the GPS needs to wait for the next satellite sending the almanach.

So, place the device with free view of the sky, enable "Keep screen on", enjoy a glass of Bordeaux and when it's done, you may have a fix.

Cheers, Michael

Thank you for the super fast response!  Bordeaux poured, phone doing the work :-)

Bordeaux consumed, phone working a treat!   Thank you very much.  Donation plug in, installed, donation coming!

I also work in tech support and I have to say that this is the sort of "human" support that we like to think we offer. From tech to tech, GOOD JOB!

Hello, Michael

The problem with hot start exists on devices which haven't a source of initial coordinates. For instance, on PC tablets without GSM. After the almanac was collected, receiver INFINIT overhauls initial coordinates. Only swithc WiFi ON can help to find а solution. But this is not always possible. At the same time, initial coordinates are almost allways well known by user. He could enter them, for instance, from a map. But GPS Essentials unfortunatly has no such option. If it is possible, I'd donate this option with pleasure.

One more feacher connected with the warm start. The fact of almanac collection is hidden in GoogleMaps Mobile as well as in GPS Essentials. Ii would be good when we know always the age of almanac. For instance, from dashboard.

The third, less important problem, of GPS Essentials is that satellites window is EMPTY when we use OUTER GPS receiver with help of Android application 'GPS Provider'. Observations are good, but there is no satellites picture.

Thanks in advance.
Best regards.

Thanks for the feedback.

Looking into the almanach is not supported by Android's location API. I would need to talk to the GPS unit directly which might make me run into device dependent issues. I'll run some tests to see if I can get something going, at least for SiRF receivers which are probably most popular.

The reason you don't see satellite positions with external GPS is probably based on the same problem: Either the external GPS does not support the required NMEA sentences or the GPS tethering app you use don't support it. I don't have external GPS receivers here, maybe someone else can report if the sky view shows satellites with external receivers...

Thank you for your attention and quick report. OK, I understand the difficulties connected with almanach. Android is quite self-confident system. And what is your opinion about manual assignment of initial coordinates to receiver?

That's again not supported by the API. Android does this with cell and Wifi locations, if I find the time I'll have a look into the source code to see how they do it.

I think, it is a huge defect of Android. It would be great, if you could solve this problem. Unfortunately, I can't :-(
Be successfull.

No worries, Nick has somehow subscribed to this forum. I told him how to unsubscribe, there is a notice on every email you receive that contains links to unsubscribe.

BTW, if you receive per topic emails from this forum, a simple reply to this email (which goes to gpsess...@googlegroups.com then) posts a reply.

Hello, Michael

Meanwiles, I use "GPS Fake location" successfully as a source of initial coordinates for GPS receiver. Only one note I'd like to add. It is necessary to take care that at the same time with input of fake coordinate, their a priori error was entered. If such error will be too small in comparison with the true error, observations at all won't begin.

I wish you success

Guys, I wonder if the problem isn't deeper than this "20 minutes to find the first fix" diagnosis because I am getting the same satellite display, "12-18 satellites visible, 0 used in fix", even after 20 minutes or more, HOWEVER, there IS a navigation fix, with correct lon & lat, and dashboard and maps all work perfectly. I have GPS enabled, no Wi-Fi enabled. BTW, this worked correctly on my previous phone, and in fact it worked correctly (satellites turn green when a fix is computed) on this phone but it no longer works now. This is a Samsung Galaxy III mini.

Also, when I match the satellites shown on GPS Essentials against the satellites shown on my fixed console GPS unit, I see the same satellites and the same azimuths so this tells me that the Samsung GPS receiver is picking them up correctly and the information is passing to the App.

So in satellite view you see "no fix" and a lat/lon at the same time?
