For reasons related to data protection, we rarely delete user accounts when people leave. Instead, we suspend the accounts and move them to a special OU. I'd like to prevent those suspended accounts from auto-completing in the email composition window's To: field. I also want to remove them from users' personal Contact Lists (to achieve the same goal).

As I see it, I can do this either by modifying settings for the OU containing the accounts or by using GAM to disable the Directory Sharing toggle in each user's record. But I can't figure out how to accomplish either method.

Can anyone help?

Let me say this: I know about gam all users_susp update user gal false and have used it, but it's out of date as soon as I suspend another user, and it doesn't do anything about users' individual Contact Lists.

So... any ideas?

Hello,

I have been using two GAM commands. If all suspended users are in one OU, you can use the following CMD to remove all users in this OU from the GLOBAL ADDRESS LIST (GAL).
  • gam ou "/Path/to/OU" update user gal off
If not all users are in one OU, you can individually remove users from GAL with this CMD.
  • gam update user <User Email Address> gal false

Agreed. It would be great if there was a directory setting for GAL where you could disable it at the OU level, but until that time, periodically doing this through GAM is probably the best we can hope for.
