New AppEngine Console seems to hang quite a bit

I have never had problems with the old (original) appengine console. However, whenever I try to use the new one, it hangs quite a bit. The only way I can seem to get it to stop hanging it to close all browser windows, log out of all google accounts, then log in with just the single google account that is manging appengine and then go to the console. This is extremely annoying. Is anyone else having this problem?

+Michael who is the PM for the new console.

Yes, I am very interested in knowing if other people are seeing this.

Hi Brad,
this is one of our major pains using Appengine. Old console is very slow and new one is very buggy. I can notice new things appearing there all the time so I know team is working on it, but it is still very unreliable. I must have sent tonnes of error reports by now, but to this day it is not working as expected. Also it seems, it depends on the project. On some projects it works better, on some worse.

Just to be specific, I will list my main pains:

1) Task queue doesn't work, or works intermittently( update: works today, didn't work yesterday). I often had to go to old console for that
2) Cloud Datastore management doesn't work
 a) Dashboard half works. Doesn't give main stats, but if I put entity name and Landlord after some wait unexpectedly result appears
 b) Query is the most important tool for me there, it's extremely buggy and disappointing. If you ask me for a single thing to improve, that would be Datastore Query tool.
3) Memcache viewer comes empty, while old console shows all the data
4) Appengine Search comes empty, again old console shows all the data across namespaces
5) Log browser. Some tips on doing effective search will be very useful. Otherwise it seems there is a lot of potential and we are not even touching the surface.

To be fair I got to say, it is better this week. So it's improving, but certainly not as expected.

This is really important to us and one of the areas where Google Console could shine, as there is so much power hidden there. Just need to get UI to do it's act.

Thanks.

The new console also works if I log into it in an incognito window. I have a feeling it is trying to use the wrong Google credentials when I am logged into multiple Google accounts simultaneously.

A lot of things are broken with multiple Google accounts. Use the Google Chrome multiple users feature with only one Google account per Chrome window, to keep your sanity:

Hi there, I tried to reproduce the issue of "the console is not working" when using multiple Google accounts, but I cannot get it to fail. Can you mention the concrete steps you took that did not work? Do they consistently fail, or just sometimes?

Thanks,
Michael Thomsen

It is not consistent. I am now using a separate Chrome user as suggested by PK and it seems to be working great!

Hi Huseyn,

If there are issues in the new console we definitely want to get them resolved. Some questions:

RE 1: Do you mean that some times the task queue table simply fails to load? Do you get a specific error when that happens? How consistently does it occur? It it the pull queue tab, the push queue tab, the cron jobs tab, or all of them?

RE 2: Again, can you detail what it is that does not work? For a), what are the stats that are missing? For b, what specific types of queries are missing?

RE 3 & 4: Is this an intermittent issue, or do these always come up empty? Do you have this problem just in a single project or in all of them?

RE 5: The documentation is here. Can you let me know what things you think are missing?

Regards, Michael Thomsen

Thanks. I would like to try and hunt this issue down. Can you give me a concrete example of some thing that failed when using multiple accounts in a single profile but works when using separate profiles?

Sure - when logged into 2 google accounts, if I go to the cloud console, I can select the project, but then the dashboard for that project never loads. I just see the 3 animating dots.

Thanks, one last question: Which browser and OS are you using?

Hi Michael,
Today is my lucky day. Someone is looking at concrete issues with Cloud Console. I will provide you with any information you need. You can't imagine how much pain I had with it.

Re 1. To be fair for last two days it seems to be working. But I had problems opening task queue when it had lots of tasks in it and it was active.

Re2. a) I go to Dashboard and here is what coming:

2b) GIF speaks better that 1000 pictures. Here is a gif showing my experience with QueryTool:

What can we see from the gif above:
  i) apart from being very, very slow, it gives error messages even without me selecting anything (which is very annoying)
ii) then I try to enter namespace and kind, and it keeps giving exceptions (seems it is trying to be smart and lookup while i am typing, but I would rather it wait till i finish typing)
iii) Here is the biggest issue. Once I typed namespace and kind and it tells me there is no such entity, i have to clear kind field and paste it again for me to finally see entity
iv) no way to see list of namespaces
  v) no way to see list of kinds

It seems this query tool was not properly tested with namespaces. I hope you can see, it is a pain to use. I even don't mention the improvements to the core functionality of  the tool, just to get the basics working that will be great in itself.

Re 3 &4: It's not intermittent, just doesn't work for one particular project (which by the way is the one I care much about). This is what I see:

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more information.
Thanks .

Best Huseyn

Hi,

I need some additional info to actually figure out what's wrong:

When you are in a state where you are seeing this problem with multiple login, could you reply with:

* The URL you are at in the project list.
* The URL you are sent to when you click on a project and it does not load properly.
* Any javascript errors printed in Chrome's Javascript console.

Thanks for the very detailed feedback! I have logged bugs for these, hopefully we will get them fixed shortly.

okay, mystery solved.

Keith was using the Disconnect chrome extension.
This extension was blocking the entire apis.google.com domain, which host the google javascript client library [1].
It's used by a bunch of product to access our APIs from the browser - from +1 buttons, to the Monitoring graphs shown in the Developers Console.

I would recommend adding a exception for this host when you are accessing https://console.developers.google.com

Hi Michael,
Do you know, if there is any progress on the issues above?
We are really struggling with this new Cloud Console.

I am not sure if this is related to our App being hosted in Europe. It seems something is fundamentally wrong with Europe hosted Appengine instances. Cloud Console issues, backup issues, managed backup not supported and etc. This really worries us

Thanks.

Hi, yes there are some known issues with datastore UI and Europe. We have a bunch of fixes we have been working on for a while going out in the next few weeks that hopefully will improve this. I will check back on that shortly.

Also, issue ii) you mentioned above should be resolved now. Did you notice any difference there?

Hi Michael,
yes it is better, I can say. But it will be great to get official announcement about fixes, so we know for sure which issues are resolved.

Thanks

Hi Michael,
I am taking my words back. This database query screen is the most buggy application I have ever used.
Can I just suggest to remove whileYouType querying and just add Query button, like in old good one?
Also Filter doesn't work at all.

Hope this feedback helps.

Best,
Huseyn

Hi Michael, Brad and everyone else here,
Just wanted to update and get updated on the progress of the issues raised here.

It has been over four months since I wrote the feedback above and still situation is not much better, as the two main tools don't work for us and we have to go back to old console for that:

1) Datastore query is VERY slow and useless without filters. (I have seen shortly preview of new version in January, which was great, but that unfortunately disappeared)
4) Appengine Search comes empty, again old console shows all the data across namespaces (says "This application has no indexes")

I have seen there were a number of improvements in other areas, but these tools are key ones for us and cause lots of problems. We are blind without seeing data. One allows to browse through search data and another to Query Datastore.

Best,
Huseyn Guliyev
