How to set the error logfile 'c:\\program files(x86)\Google\google_appengine\Launcher\GoogleAppengineLauncher.exe.log' for details

Are you asking how to set the log file the launcher saves to, or how to see this log file?

You mention encountering an error whenever using Google App Engine Launcher that directs you to the log file found at C:\Program Files(x86)\Google\google_appengine\launcher\GoogleAppengineLauncher.exe.log.
  • Can you post the contents of the logfile here?
  • If not, can you describe what you are doing when this error occurs and provide a screenshot of the message when it happens?
Answers to the above questions might help us better identify the cause of the error you've encountered or at least tell us where else we should investigate.

Yes, to add to the above post the error message tells you 'see the log file for details' and gives you the location of the log file on your computer. You need to browse to 'C:\Program Files(x86)\Google\google_appengine\launcher' and open the log file, which will contain information about why the launcher failed to start. This will generally be in the form of a stack trace and some additional lines of info.

If the log information doesn't make sense, please feel free to post the most recent error information from the end of the log file.

It seems this can happen if you are using Windows XP, and you are trying to run the launcher as a different user than the one who installed it. I found some references to this issue here and here.

Here are some possible solutions, which should work on any version of Windows:

1) Install the App Engine SDK as your currently logged in user, and not a different user.
2) You can try creating a HOME environment variable for your user which points to 'C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]' as per these instructions.

If you happen to be using Windows XP you might consider using a more updated version as it is no longer supported.

Although the bugs only reference Windows XP, the main cause seems to be running the Launcher from a different account than the one who installed it. As mentioned, please try reinstalling the App Engine SDK as your current user.

If you don't have admin access on your machine, you can try adding the user environment variable in Windows 10 by opening a command prompt and typing:
setx USER C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]

Where [YOUR USERNAME] is replaced by your actual Windows username.
