Thanks for letting us know about this exception.  Could you elaborate on under what conditions you are seeing this crash?  Are you able to reproduce it in our sample app?  What are the steps and logic involved?

Hi Vu,

I'm sorry, no, I was not able to reproduce the crash locally. I only see the reports in the developer console.

The crash only happens in the latest version of my app, which was bundled with play-services-ads version 8.1.0. The update was release on October 30. There were no ad-related changes other than updating from 6.5.87 to 8.1.0.

Affected Android version are 5.1, 5.0 and 4.4.

Hi Vu,

We started seeing the exact same error in all active versions of our app Sing! Karaoke starting in November -- once on 11/3, then approximately 250-500 app crashes per day starting 11/17.   We have been using play-services-ads:7.3.0 for the last six months or so, but only started seeing the error mid-November.   This affects Android versions 4.4, 5.0, and 5.1.

One thought we had was that this could this be related to missing Proguard rules, which did not cause a problem until some change in ad data.  We just added the rules from

Is that the correct set of Proguard rules we should be using with play-services-ads:7.3.0, or are there others we should include?   Does the 11/17 date coincide with any changes in ad delivery?

November 17 seems to be relevant. The first report for my app came in on that day as well.

Hi all,

I'm not immediately aware of any changes in ad delivery on November 17.  Besides the ProGuard rules you quoted, we have recently published two more but they are only helpful if you are using mediation.  Nevertheless, you can find them here.  

Just so we are on the same page, I have a couple of other questions:

1. Which ad type (banner, interstitial, or native) are you seeing this crash with?  Is it specific to an ad unit ID?
2. Are you on the latest version of your respective SDK?

To be able to troubleshoot this crash, we'll have to be able to reproduce it locally.  So, feel free to let us know as soon as you have more details, including steps and (if your implementation differs from our sample logic) how your app's architecture is set up.

Hi Vu,

#1: interstitial, see the stack trace I have posted previously.

#2: the app is live with version 8.1.0.

I will update to the latest version 8.3.0, but I will also add a try-catch around InterstitialAd.loadAd so it will probably not be possible to tell if the problem persists..

Just to follow up, we have identified a fix that we can implement without a re-release of the SDK.  The fix is rolling out now, and you shouldn't see this issue again after a week or so.
