Hey, everyone!  Given that GOLUM is no longer active, I'm hoping to get together a group of Linux/Unix users, enthusiasts, and admins again.  If you're interested in being a part of it, let me know!

Sounds good. Maybe make it a broader, Open Source group, and put together a meetup. I work at a data center at Southwind that has meeting space that can be use for tech talks, etc. I have noticed a like of local meet up groups that are for admins. Most of them are for developers. I'm in!

P.S.  Yes, Slack is great.  You can do some pretty cool things with it, even script execution...at least you could the last time I used it.  We worked up a way to flush DNS on our servers with a line pasted into Slack at work, while we were playing around with it.  Very handy.  And a little bit scary.

Hey all,

Since GOLUM seems to be coming back to life, I wanted to ask any recent college grads or current college students about Linux in your curriculum.  Is Linux covered at all?  I recently hired someone for an entry-level admin position we created, and not a single person we interviewed who came out of college recently had any kind of Linux experience.  Everyone we interviewed, graduated from (or attended) different schools, all said that Linux was not covered in their coursework.  I have a guy that works for us who is currently in college, and he tells me the same thing.  I found this very surprising.  My organization alone has over 500 Linux servers.  Are you guys seeing the same thing, a lack of Linux exposure in college curriculum?

CBU has exposure to it for sure, that said -- there's no better way to go from zero to functioning than to just have them work through Linux From Scratch. At least in my experience.

My intro to CS course required us to be at least capable of logging in remotely and running a compiler, although we were encouraged to learn more about it.  This was in Pennsylvania, though.

Just gotta dig in, break stuff and learn to fix it. I had a Linux course in college and it was VERY basic in nature. I learned a lot by just spinning up VMs and seeing what all I could do and configure.

I promoted a friend to learn Linux on his own while taking computer engineering at UofM. 

At a job fair interview for a manufacturing intern position in Mississippi, my friend showed up in a track suit, while all his classmates were in business suits. 

So one of the interviewers went down the line, asking each applicant about their Linux knowledge. When they got to Mr. Tracksuit, he said, "It is really hard to explain an operating system. Here, let me show you my Linux server, here on my phone." Suddenly there was a crowd of recruiter staff around him. He had fun that summer, and learned a lot -- not to mention, got a great job on graduation.

Just shows, wear a tracksuit to get in the running.

My introduced classes were like the others have said. They encouraged us to login and compile our c++ code, but they never showed us how to do it. Later on we got a really good professor who is no longer there. He did an intro to Linux, Linux system admin class, and a bash script class.

We never covered anything advanced like lvm, but we did cover the basic and intermediate stuff. The knowledge I gain from just his intro to Linux was more in detail and advance I think then the Linux foundation intro to Linux. I do agree with the others though most people my age or younger who are in school or graduating seem to not have much or any experience in Linux.

I've been interested in starting a cloud / virtualization meet up or user group. Do you see cloud, virtualization, open source, and Linux being all the same area, or would cloud / virtualization be a different group? I like the idea of appealing to administrators as well, as most of the meetups in town are for developers.

I'm open to either option, really.  I think as long as it's something that will be of interest or use to Linux/Unix admins, we should definitely be open to including it, but I want to hear the rest of the group's opinions on this matter as well.

I think there will be a significant overlap between the groups, but I could be wrong.  I know in my current role (and the role I'm about to move to), there is a lot of overlap between Linux and using cloud/virtualization.

What do you guys think?  Strictly *NIX?  Or should we be open to related topics like the cloud, virtualization, and other open source projects?

Southwest TN community collage has a basic Linux/Unix course intended for beginners. I am self taught though. The course did manage to make be use a few tools I otherwise wouldn't have touched (unix systems for instance).

Would get you through the basics, but more advanced scripting and configuration was not covered.

Most of my knowledge comes from my experience with Gentoo, which I started using in high school. (actually still using it now, along with arch)

Also interested in suggestions on where to look as a non-grad for a Linux position.

I have an old acquaintance at Google who barely graduated high school, but because he "wasted his time" with computers back in the day, he's gotten a great career out of it.

I think if you just get out in the community, you'll be able to find something.  Networking is a LOT more powerful that I would've admitted last year.

This was a long while back, 2006, but the CS course I took online via CTU had a Linux / Unix class.  I was already self taught but found a lot of the bash scripting stuff to be super useful.  My professor was blown away when I setup a debian potato box on a p133, 16 mb of ram and 3 gb hard drive.  I setup accounts for all my classmates and setup telnet and ssh access so they could play with an actual linux machine without using cygwin.  Good times.

I would love to meet up with all yall if I get the time.  I don't do much with linux these days other than my kids laptops and some raspberry pi's.

I first learned Linux at STCC in 2001. Dr. Morris gave me my start on the command line and VIM. Dr. Gamble taught a shell scripting class called Linux tools. When I went to U of Memphis to get my bachelor's in MIS I took another scripting course from the CS department as an elective. The whole time I was teaching myself Linux by running Gentoo. The main problem here is many Linux jobs require a 4 year degree but it's not something that's taught at public 4 year institutions.

FYI, if you have a 4 year degree and live in or are willing to move to Shelby County MLGW has Linux openings. Permanent placement at MLGW includes a full benefits package and the MLGW pension plan. It's been very difficult to find qualified candidates in the Memphis area so far. Our Linux environment is rapidly expanding. We run Red Hat, Oracle VM with Oracle Linux, and SUSE to support our Novell software. Email me off list and I'll send you application information.

Thanks for the great input. As someone who doesn't excel at (social) networking, its nice to know that the options are actually out there.

Also is nice to see someone else learned via Gentoo outside of gentoo's IRC.

I tried learning pen testing with backtrack/kali a few years ago. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to fit with me. My original goal was to be a programmer or in robotics, but at this point in time I am probably better suited to be a sysadmin.

Yeah, sadly when I taught in college up in Buffalo, NY, I was one of two Unix/Linux admin course instructors and one of the last to actually teach using hands-on methodology vs using a simulator.  Now, I work with Linux everyday on 1000+ plus servers (mainframes and mid-range servers) that run the Linux OS.

Great to see this list and perhaps this LUG coming back.  It was the first LUG I joined.  I learned so much about Linux, and computing in general from the group, the threads, the meet-up discussion, the installfest; all of it.  I recognize some of the old names of members and have been meaning to reply.  I see some new names of folks who I remember in Memphis who were just getting started in IT, and have become serious professionals.  I talked about the fun times we had in Memphis at the other LUGs I have been a part of; the San Gabriel Valley LUG that used to meet up at CalTech comes to mind.

The conversation about college and universities not teaching Linux/Unix is rather disappointed.  Granted when I went through school we had to beg, borrow, and steal to get time on the mainframe.  There we wasted LOTS of time, but we learned a lot from one another.  I guess more courses teach using a specific package to fix a specific problem instead of techniques and the logic to solve problems.  Yes, Kali is a WONDERFUL distro for pen testing, and network hardening, but if all the classes are teaching use package X for this, package Y, for that, and Package Z to fix those, then it really does not matter what OS and system runs the tools.  Only a few people will want to get into the nuts and bolts behind the tool.

Hey all,

Some great responses here, and pretty much what I expected. Seems like if Linux is taught at all, it's sparingly. That's amazing to me, as far-reaching and embedded as Linux is these days.  Hard to believe it's not even touched upon in most cases. I did hear that SW had a Linux concentration, or major at one time. 

I agree, a great way to do it is to spin up a VM or box and jump in. However, I found that my Linux knowledge exploded when I was fortunate to work with a group of guys who lived and breathed open source and Linux. If you can find some guys like that, like a lot of the guys in this mailing list, that helps tremendously. 

Great to see some great old names from back in the day pop up and respond. Hey Mic! True story, I was an intern at a company in Memphis (almost 20 years ago...), and I walked by Mic's cube one day and saw him working on some interface I had never seen before. I asked him what that was... "Linux, dude. Red Hat  running the Enlightenment desktop, to be exact," was the response. He gave me a Red Hat CD, and changed my entire trajectory. Linux has helped to feed myself and my family ever since. Thanks, buddy. I still owe you for that. I hope you (and everyone else) are doing well.

When I went to U of Memphis a couple years back there were maybe 6 or 8 Ubuntu workstations in the very back row of the biomed engineering computer lab.  They were mostly unused.  They existed to host a few legacy applications accessed remotely from windows boxes in the same room. At the top of the semester, programming classes taught in the room would announce that they were there, you can use them if you want, just don't shut down the servers running on them, and don't expect to get any support. Then all the lessons (command line C coding at least) were done on Windows boxes.  I tried a few assignments I knew well on those Linux machines but any time you actually wanted to hear the instructor, you needed to sit closer at one of the non Linux machines.  When I left, there was talk of getting rid of them because no one uses them.   

The campus began an evil network security policy that mandated installation of a registration app on all machines connected to the campus network.  The TOS actually said that anyone accessing the network even once gives the campus right to "full control" of that computer including installing new software, removing existing software, deleting user accounts on the computer, and restricting operation of that computer. They used this 'right' to scan campus visitors for music and movie files and block P2P apps like Transmission, and report them to 'authorities' like mpaa and riaa.  I used my android cell phone on their network to access a syllabus, and the app somehow made itself an administrator.  I had to do a factory reset to get rid of it.

They forgot to make a registration app for some Linux flavors so every person running a raspberry pi for final projects had to apply for network access daily by phone.  The Cisco networking class was effectively shut down for 2 weeks.  They got so tired of taking the calls that once they registered a Linux MAC address once, they put it on a permanent white list.  So we brought in a bunch of our personal routers and gave them cloned MAC addresses so we could connect our laptops effectively bypassing the app.

That is one of the most intense policies I have ever heard of. I understand the need for college campuses to put forth some strict guidelines, as they are essentially trying to corral the wild west, but that is way overboard. So by policy, U of M is forcing out Linux machines for all except the truly dedicated. That's really unfortunate.

That University of Memphis network policy is relatively new. I connected my Ubuntu ThinkPad to the campus wifi with my IAM network password from 2003-2007. No client was necessary.

The current policy as stated sounds extremely intrusive. I'd tether my laptop to my phone or run Windows in a VM to connect instead. I'm an EFF member and I'd be glad to help support students who wanted to organize to protest the policy. 

Privacy issues aside, this policy forces students to buy software licenses for basic network access. I worked part-time and temp jobs when I went back to college.  The reason I could afford to go back is I chose to live frugally. Running a free OS on a 5 year old laptop meant I could afford books and food.

I would join but... how many accounts do I need? Being an old admin with long hair and a beard... I've been using IRC since 1995... so IRC is where it at for me. Everything else has come along and many of gone. I have a XKCD single panel comic printed out and on my wall that has a ton of stick figures drawn with a couple of dozen overlapping circles... with each circle being a different communications service that has come around in recent years. It has the caption of:

Anyway, the bulk of FLOSS projects I affiliate with have an IRC channel... and most of them are using the Freenode IRC network... so I'm generally on freenode during work hours. Our LUG channel on freenode is #ubuntu-montana. Almost no one in the channel actually uses Ubuntu but we were too lazy to create a new channel.

Anyway, there's something to be said for IRC. Unfortunately many of the younger people don't seem to get IRC... jump in a channel for the first time... immediately ask a question... and if it isn't answered in 3 minutes they leave the channel and IRC completely. SIGH. I guess that is proof that IRC isn't as good for 'casual' use, eh? :)

For what it's worth, I've been told there are ways to make IRC clients talk to Slack, if you're interested in that.
