  1. Is there a list of other free map tile servers that can be used with GC?
  2. If 1., are there any other instructions that I'd need for using a different map tile sever to get going outside of just entering tile server entry field in map settings?
Can see that some other map tile severs have nice elevation lines would be nice addition in the map.

(no URLs for the servers here.. or am I missing something..?)

OpenTopo Map has elevation lines and is working fine here.

Tile server URL:
https://{s}.tile.opentopomap.org/{z}/{x}/{y}.png

The tiles url column has what you are looking for, see https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/wiki/UG_ChartTypes_Activities#map for details

I tried to put all necessary information in the wiki, but this continues to be a source of questions, and I reckon current Map situation is undesirable:

1) default OSM tile server is blocked, likely due to the reasons explained in https://operations.osmfoundation.org/policies/tiles/ and the map background is empty without warnings.
2) it doesn’t seem to be another obvious candidate for default, choosing an alternative free server without previous agreement will likely produce the same result sooner or later, free services with ample usage quotas are increasingly difficult to find.
3) It will be possible to use a tile server with registration required s.t. OpenCycleMap without a key so the map displays a warning and the user can register to have their own quota.

Ideas are welcome.

Thanks @Poncho

So fiddled with it a bit... looks like if you enter the part before the z..x..y..png it works so "http://a.tile.opentopomap.org/".. obviously I have a very basic understanding.. lol...

Another one I found and got working and is very good is

has elevation lines, cycle paths etc.. missing highway labels.. not sure if possible to get rid of "API Key Required" overlays in tiles..? Looks like Key appears after the png in url so not possible to enter it in URL in GC..?

Thanks @Ale Martinez !

See the full URL is a feature in 3.6.. this will solve the api key missing portion of the URL and get rid of that tile overlay... NICE!

"In v3.6 the full URL is also accepted, so you can use Tile servers requiring registration embedding your personal apikey there, see the provider documentation for details. For example to use Thunderforest OpenCycleMap the URL looks like: https://tile.thunderforest.com/cycle/{z}/{x}/{y}.png?apikey=<your-apikey-here>"

Just playing with adding several maps tile servers this is what I can see can be improved
  1. Map tiles layer should be able to be dimmed or desaturated to make the ride's path more visible - The map details are great, but often visually overpower and make it hard to see the ride's path (map details have many colours and saturated colours).. especially if multicoloured "shaded zone" (which I find useful is on)
  2. The colour and width of yellow outline of ride path should be configurable - depending on map tiles other colours might be preferable (don't overlap colours of map tile details).. increasing width (if highlight colour is transparent) make path more visible
  3. The "Show full plot" can gain a tonne of utility if you could hover cursor over full plot and the location of that point shows on map. This would allow you to correlate power and elevation features on plot to the map.. this would be very useful!
Thanks for you help.. my favourite cycling oriented map tile servers I've found and gotten to work are so far:

Please raise this as an issue/improvement, and I'll have a look it.

Regards,
Paul.

Try using thunderforest --> landscape, the tile colours are pastel and the route is easier to see: https://tile.thunderforest.com/landscape/{z}/{x}/{y}.png

Also see  pull request: User selectable map route line color and switchable route line out & back opacity  which hopefully will improve the route line visibility.

I'll have a think about:
  1. The "Show full plot" can gain a tonne of utility if you could hover cursor over full plot and the location of that point shows on map. This would allow you to correlate power and elevation features on plot to the map.. this would be very useful!

@Paul… I had a look at your proposals and I think they likely give enough configurability and will help a lot. It’s mostly about making route more visible when using different map tile servers that can have a variety of colour schemes. So yeah... can make the route more conspicuous as you propose or make map recede. I like! 👍🏾
