Hi all,

I'm excited to announce the early access release of my book, Go in Action.

Go in Action
by Evan Shaw
Published by Manning Publications Co.
ISBN: 9781617290787

The complete e-book is expected by the end of the year and the print
version is expected in spring 2013.

Go in Action is a full guided tour of the Go 1 programming language
and some of its commonly-used packages. It targets programmers who
know at least one other language, but might be suitable for motivated
novices. It covers the basics quickly so more time can be spent
exploring features like interfaces and concurrency. Later chapters
focus on network programming and web services, and the final chapters
address advanced topics like reflection, unsafe, and cgo.

I want to stress that the book isn't finished -- even the parts that
have been released. By being a part of the early access release, you
can read chapters as they're written and influence the contents of the
book through your feedback. I appreciate any comments I get and take
them seriously.

We're offering a 37% discount to golang-nuts subscribers. Use the
coupon code 12go37 to receive this discount. You can purchase the book
through Manning's website:

That's really sad. From the early chapters it seemed like the best Go
book I've seen
(admittedly from a very small sample!)

I work with him. I'll point out that this thread exists, to ensure he knows about it, but I can't promise anything. He may have his own reasons for not commenting here, and I'll respect those. I have a lot of respect for him, and am sure that if he has decided not to continue on with the book, it is for a very good reason, even if it is for a reason he is not able to or comfortable sharing.

As I said, though, I'll direct him to the thread in case it got overlooked in his inbox.

Hi all,

I plan on posting a retrospective on my Google+ once I've actually straightened out the full story with Manning. I'm very disappointed and I'm sorry to any of you who bought the MEAP and are inconvenienced by the cancellation.

Ya I actually just remembered I had early ordered the book, and went to look for it thinking it must be completely out by now... then found it was cancelled :-(

The strange thing is that Manning doesn't just issue you a refund when a book is canceled, nor do they mention it is canceled on the page for the book. I only figured out how to access the refund by stumbling on their beta.manning.com, logging into an existing account, and seeing the book listed there with a link to request the refund. So I suppose their style of business is just to make the customers actually track the status of the book and ask for their money back directly, instead of just automatically refunding early orders for people when a book cancels.

Would love to read the retrospective when it is available.

Until recently I thought bketelsen is writing for The Pragmatic Bookshelf: http://pragprog.com/book/bkgo/the-go-programming-language
But in the tweets I linked he explicitely wrote: "manning publisher. Go in Action. taking over this book: http://manning.com/shaw/"

Prag canceled the Go book.  I am now writing Go in Action for Manning, along with Erik St. Martin.  We expect an Early Release in the next few weeks.

So is this "Go in Action" actually related to the originally proposed
Evan Shaw book of the same
name, or is it a complete rewrite?

It’s a complete rewrite. The original copy “belongs” to Evan, so we have no rights to use any of the material, unless he wishes to convey those rights.

Well, that's a pity. I thought the original was beautifully clear
and simple, in a way that the only other Go book I've seen
was not - it reminded me a little of K&R.

I hope you manage something similarly elegant - I have every
confidence!

Packt is the kind of publisher that randomly contacts as many people as
they can, even if those only have remotely to do with the topic they
want you to write about or create videos for or whatever. Quite a number
of Go contributors, for example, have been contacted numerous times to
write a book or review a book or create a video course. And since their
book is called "Google Go" now, I don't think they'll have found many
contributors who were willing to review it.

Packt has contacted me about probably 3-4 different titles now. The first time they did, I thought it was something special, but then I realized that they do just scan around the internets for anyone with even a keyword in their information.
I was contacted once by someone, for whom I had answered a StackOverflow question relating to PyQt4, telling me he had been approached by Packt to write a book on PyQt4. He was really excited to do it, even though his experience on the topic, as per his StackOverflow questions, was beginner/intermediate :-)

They finally started contacting me about reviewing books now. I'm really excited to do this, because they will give me a free book for my efforts.

The Go In Action book is available via Manning's Early Access program today.  http://www.goinactionbook.com  If you purchase before 3/26/2014 you may use code mlketelsen for a 50% discount.

Thanks everyone for their patience while we work hard to make a book that makes the Go community proud.

Thanks for the info. FYI, the code isn't good for the e-book + print bundle -- only the e-book by itself. Still a good deal.

Manning tells me you’ll get an opportunity to upgrade to the printed book at discounted levels later in the MEAP process if you were only able to buy the ebook using the discount code.

I'm pretty sure you must be confusing it with another book.

It's still there, and they just released an update to the pre-release on January 20th.
The authors have been active on Twitter.

Please provide your reference indicating the book has been canceled.
