Currently, the hold time for that function is like a couple of seconds or so; not nearly enough for me to actually read the number... I would really appreciate the option to set the time for that delay...

actually, I'd be content if it simply held indefinitely, until I pressed a key... any chance of getting such an option??

SHOW will show the full number for 2 seconds, or for as long as you hold the [.] key, whichever is longer.

There is also the NN→S function (found in CATALOG→STR), which converts the number in X to a string at full precision. This won't help much in Free42, because that string will still be truncated to fit on one line, so you'd still need SHOW to see it in full, but in Plus42, that string will be shown in full, even if it doesn't fit on one line.

If I need to study the full result, or need it constantly displayed for reference, I use Edit->Copy
Then paste it into an open notepad or other application for further use and study.

Cheers

Very cool!!  Thanks to both of you!!
I didn't know what Edit->Copy did, and I also didn't know about continuing to hold the Show button to keep the value displayed!!

Clearly, it is time to open the manual and review it...
I haven't done so, because I've used HP calculators for decades, and thought I knew how they worked...
but there's alot more to Plus42 than there is to the physical calculator...

Plus42 is basically Free42 (which is basically an HP-42S), with HP-17B/19B/27S/35S equations and HP-48/49/50 units and directories bolted on. The Free42 and Plus42 web pages contain pointers to relevant documents, of which the HP-42S manual is the most important one. I can't recommend the 42S manual enough.

My intention is that for someone who is familiar with the HP-42S, or has read the HP-42S manual, the Free42 and Plus42 web pages should be enough to understand all the added functionality, but those pages are very terse. For equations specifically, reading the HP manual sections I point out in the Plus42 documentation section is highly recommended.

When I started using the HP-42S, back in 1989, I found it very useful to read the manual, even though I already had over 10 years of experience with programmable HP calculators by then, mostly with the HP-41C and 41CX. The 42S has enough sophisticated functionality that discovering it all without a manual is not really practical. Despite the well-designed user interface, there is just more than initially meets the eye.
