How long are private FOIA requests kept private?

Do private FOIA machine requests stay private until you get an answer or do they automatically go public at some point in time?

They are private as long as you keep them private! After six months of inactivity  (we may change the length of time) you'll get an email asking if you'd like to make the request public.

I have a similar question...  Since I work as an independent investigative journalist, I want to file FOIAs for projects that I can pitch for future work.  I therefore would prefer to retain the information for private use -- that is, until I publish it.  I would certainly understand if this doesn't work with your mission, and wouldn't want to interfere with that in any way.  So, can you better explain to me how this would work so that I can determine how this can work to ensure the privacy of my information, and the extent to which my requests will be shared among my peers.  I would love to collaborate on FOIAs (and I've certainly got a bunch of them), but can't afford to do so if it means the risk of getting scooped in any way.  Thanks very much for your help...
