Hi, everyone.
I am trying to find a way to type ǽ  in Flex (æ with an acute accent over it).  I am using the US international keyboard and can gete æ without the accent by hitting right.alt + z.  But if I hit apostrophe before producing  æ (which would correctly place an acute accent on a vowel like "e"), I get 'æ,  rather than having the accent over æ.  Alternatively, if I produce æ and then use left.alt and using 0769 (which correctly places an acute accent over æ in Microsoft Word), nothing happens.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mike

You can use Keyman software.

I believe the accent is to be typed after the base vowel character. The accent appends to whats is before it.

Hi Mike,

As you probably already know, the US International keyboard has many useful characters, but when you get more complex combinations (like ǽ), this keyboard is not sufficient for all needs.

You probably need one of the SIL phonetic fonts + a keyboard that will allow you to type all the combinations you need.  Here’s a blog post about the issue

Keyman is a commonly used option.  I have found using this option somewhat cumbersome.

You might also look at https://languagegeek.com/lgwp/keyboards/, where there is a nice collection of custom keyboards that work well for many Native lgs.

You don't mean a literal apostrophe, right? There might be some
keyboards that would convert an apostrophe (ASCII code 39) plus a base
character into the accented base character, and there were some ancient
SIL software tools that did that when a text was sent to the printer
(not usually on-screen). But normally that sequence would just produce
an apostrophe followed by the other character, which is what one wants
when typing English--since the ASCII apostrophe doubles for the single
quote character.

So as others have said, you need a special keyboard (software, not
necessarily hardware) to place an accent over another character. The
combining acute accent is Unicode U+0301 (where "combining" means it
goes on top of some other character).

Thank you everyone for your feedback.  I will look at the solutions that you have proposed.

In case you are curious, the keystrokes that I mentioned do work, in the order that I mentioned (e.g., hitting apostrophe and then the vowel), when using the US International Keyboard in Microsoft Word.  They just don't work in FLEx.  So I will try keyman and/or the other suggestions.

Best,
Mike

Another option would be to type it in Word, and then copy/paste into FLEx from that.

There may be something in your Word setup that isn’t part of the FLEx setup.

Thank you for the copy and paste suggestion, Beth.

That's actually our current strategy :), but I'll look into the other strategies suggested to see if one of them makes this easier.

Best,
Mike

I'm a bit late here, but this is a solution that I didn't see mentioned: I use Autohotkey for a number of shortcuts, and the nice thing is it works in any program so you can use the same key sequence in email, Flex, Word, etc. The entry you would need is like this:

::aee::{U+00e6}{U+0301}

Just choose an abbreviation that works for you. I used 'aee' because it is not something I would type otherwise and is quick and memorable.

Craig.

Thank you so much for this suggestion, Craig.

I really appreciate it.

I am not familiar with Autohotkey, but I did find the website for it, so I will suggest, to my colleague who wants to use the character combination in question, that he download Auothotkey and implement the entry that you suggest.

Best,

Mike
