Greetings fish fans,

Just getting started with my Comet "4bucks". I thinking about cues and I have seen most people use coloured lights other than white. My Q's:
- has it been documented anywhere what colours fish can distinguish? (ie based on eye structure or tests)
- has anyone used sound cues?

Image cues seem to be working great for the I-pad gurus - I'm thinking I can use versions on paper. Has anyone got a video of a fish that has learnt a discrimination task and can do this via cues?

Thanks - Nicole

Hi, Nicole ~

Goldfish do have color vision and actually see into the ultraviolet spectrum. Here are a few references: http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2001-01/980697651.Zo.r.html

Goldfish are actually hearing specialists; their hearing is extremely acute. But the problem with sound cues is that sound in water decays exponentially slower than it does in air. So if, for example, we tap on the side of the aquarium, the goldfish may hear it for several seconds longer than we do.  Stimuli to be used as cues or markers need to be short, discrete, and salient, so that they can precisely mark an instant in time. In an aquatic environment, light is a more discrete marker.

I should also have mentioned that I've had great success in the past using shapes on an iPad to cue behaviors. This is illustrated in our video,
