Dear Baptiste:

I am interested in creating an XDCAM HD422 50Mb/s MXF file in order to record it to an XDCAM Disc using a PDW-U1. Unfortunately, I am not being able to succeed.  I have tried many different parameters, but none worked so far.

The general command I am using is:

./ffmbc -i "Original.mov" -threads 4 -tff -target xdcamhd422 -f mxf -an "Converted.mxf" \
-acodec pcm_s24le -ar 48000 -newaudio \
-acodec pcm_s24le -ar 48000 -newaudio \
-acodec pcm_s24le -ar 48000 -newaudio \
-acodec pcm_s24le -ar 48000 -newaudio \
-map_audio_channel 0:1:0:0:1:0 \
-map_audio_channel 0:1:0:0:2:0 \
-map_audio_channel 0:1:0:0:3:0 \
-map_audio_channel 0:1:0:0:4:0

Although the generated MXF works well in XDCAM Transfer, for example, it does not copy to a disc (original Sony MXF files do) and is not imported by the new Sony XDCAM Browser Application, which Sony states substitutes XDCAM Transfer.

Everything works when I generate IMX50 MXFs, but do not when generating XDCAM HD422.

Is there something we are getting wrong? Do you know a way of getting this to work?

Many thanks in advance and congratulations for such a great work!

Oh, late nite now, but a few points to concider:
Faststart and rerapping to QT makes it possible to write back to (physical)
disc on Mac
On your command line, i'm not sure, but i normally put the first sound track
before the output, and the other ones behind it.

Now, there is an Op1A vs Op1B issue (Avid refuses to take these files in on
AMA, but does like them on import) that might also bite you.
(Note, UNEDUCATED gueass)

Dear bouke:

Thank you for the hints. However, they did not work. Anyway, faststart would not work on mxf files, right?

I uploaded two test files:

www.berserkervideo.com/downloads/Works.mxf: This is an MXF exported using a plugin for FCP. This file is copied to an XDCAM Disc in PDW-U1 normally.

www.berserkervideo.com/downloads/DoesNotWork.mxf: This is a file generated with ffmbc and it does not copy to PDW-U1.

Interestingly: Using media verification apps, I was able to check that all parameters are exactly equal on both.

But something must be different.

Could you try to verify them and find what makes one work and the other not?

Many thanks,

JPJ.

well, my trick is to make a faststart QT and drop it onto the exporter
(somewhere in the XDcam transfer package, i forgot...)
Then the Sony software takes care of the rewrapping to MXF and XML updates.

JPJ,

After transcoding with FFMBC, try rewarapping with BMX:

SD:
bmxtranswrap -t op1a  --tc-rate "2997" --log-level 0 -l "bmxtranswrap.log" -y "00:00:00;00" -o "out.mxf" "in.mf"

HD:
bmxtranswrap -t rdd9  --tc-rate "2997" --log-level 0 -l "bmxtranswrap.log" -y "00:00:00;00" -o "out.mxf" "in.mf"

Cheers,

Cris

Hi John,

Did you succeed in copying XDCAM HD422 to disk? I could be in same situation shortly and want to have my back covered.

This works... First transcode with FFMBC, then rewrap with BMX:

> SD:
> bmxtranswrap -t op1a  --tc-rate "2997" --log-level 0 -l "bmxtranswrap.log" -y "00:00:00;00" -o "out.mxf" "in.mf"

> HD:
> bmxtranswrap -t rdd9  --tc-rate "2997" --log-level 0 -l "bmxtranswrap.log" -y "00:00:00;00" -o "out.mxf" "in.mf"

* Currently, there is no support for closed captioning tracks (SMPTE 436m)

Hey guys,

Do you mind testing 0.7.4 ? I fixed the sony content browser compatibility issue, wonder if files can be written back to disc now.

Thanks a lot !

Hi Baptiste:

Great news!

I am on a trip right now, but I’ll test it until the end of this week and let you know.

Many thanks,

Hi Chris:

Took an eternity to reply. Your message ended up in the wrong folder on my computer.

As there’s a new ffmbc version which possibly solved the problem, let me try with it first, as I know it better than bmx. I’ll try bmx if it doesn’t work.

I’ll let you know.

Thanks,

JPJ.

I downloaded a Windows Binary of 0.7.4 here:
https://doc-0g-3s-docs.googleusercontent.com/docs/securesc/nht60e3rpovpk8t1ii8c1faifdf2gq2g/beqc9h06773ob59vpc9mn48r65okhoiv/1446739200000/15532136537053803004/14051772897302012469/0B_iVwmmX17LwUk9lQmlzSEk2dEU?e=download

I've also attached it to this post - though I don't know if it will actually work to attach a .zip.

I can confirm that it makes MXF files that can be imported in Content Browser 2.1 and also be placed on a Sony XDS-PD1000.
