Wanted too express my appreciation to sebastien lelong for all his efforts over the years on a really neat project.  Looks like Google has kicked the ladder out from under this one.
I have switched to inserting unicode emojis at the beginning of the Title field in my calendar items.  (I keep an open tab with Emojipedia opened to select the ones I want copied.)
I do miss the personalized flairs but at least I have a recognizable icon from the emoji set that can still flag my events.

Thanks again...

lol, we're all preparing for "doom day" in our own ways...

I have created a large "bank" of blank calendar items containing my favorite flairs, and have a quick link to take me to the 2 weeks I've allocated in the past in which I store my "bank" of blank calendar entries containing my favorite flair (have several dozen for each flair).  I will simply check in and check out my calendar items as needed that contain the appropriate flair, sorta like a library.  Not about to lose my flairs!

:)

You guys have clever ideas :)
Doom day is getting closer, indeed, I asked info on google's forum, their silence reminds me when the original flairs went down...
I have to have a look at an implementation as a chrome extension, this is the only remaining solution I can think of. I'm not sure if it's possible to access and edit a google calendar from an extention, and also, only Chrome would be supported.

Cheers

This is to Steve Miller - Hey, Steve. What I found was that when you switch to new calendar, all the flair icons from the past are wiped out. I'm using a Mac with Sierra at the moment. I don't know if that makes a difference.

To Sebastien - I also want to say  how much I appreciate all of your efforts. I hope the extension idea works. Let us know how that is going.

To Randy - I'm going to try that. I do know you can download the entire set of FatCow icons. I don't know if they can be used in the way you are describing.I don't have them on this Mac, they are on my broken PC.

that's not good to hear. i've not switched to the new calendar and have no intention of doing so unless forced. Guess I was expecting that any existing entries with flairs would remain regardless in those entries, thus why i created my "bank" of flairs in otherwise blank entries, per my earlier post.

Steve, I wasn't able to make the Flairs stick. You can easily switch to the new calendar and back again. Clicik upgrade calendar to get the new one, then go to settings and click classic calendar to go back to the old one.

Randy your method works. The icons are not as clear and sharp and intensely colored as the Flairs and sometimes I can't get it to paste at the beginning of an existing event but I think that was just a cursor placement problem or perhaps I should have typed a space before the first letter and then gone back and pasted the emoji in the space. I haven't looked around the Emojipedia enough to know how full their icon set is, but guessing nowhere near as good as FatCow icons we get from Flair. All in all, I would vastly prefer to use Flair.

To Steve: Maybe you'd like to try his method located here:  https://emojipedia.org

Hmm, the copy and paste does work... you know, if one one used that knowledge in connection with a program like PhraseExpress or something similar, so that you could insert those icons/favicons with ease (eg by simply typing CTRL-5 or whatever, we might just have something that would work independent of Google. I'll definitely play around with that idea...

Steve, I'm not familiar with Phrase Express. But I wonder if you could play around with setting up a group of icons like we do with Flair,  and saving them someplace, even, perhaps just in an email and then using that to get your icon, say a birthday cake or a football, to copy and then paste into an event title. It would just mean opening that email or document and sitting it next to the calendar on the screen to have it handy  when creating new events.

I use a mail program on the computer, not webmail. Using an email to save the group of icons might only work for certain email programs. So you'd have to say what you're using for email.  Mine is Windows Mail from Vista (the upgrade of Outlook Express) on Windows 7 Home Premium (Not Windows Live Mail), and, Apple Mail.

Well, I've had mixed success with PhraseExpress. I've used that program for a long time to be able to assign hot keys to certain text (my different email accounts, frequent flyer numbers, etc.) and it works great.  It does have options to also use hyperlinks and images, so I was hopeful I could assign icons/favicons and then have those associated with a hot key (eg Ctrl-T for a television favicon; Ctrl-Q for a question mark, etc.), so if you were entering a new calendar event, you could simply hit the hot key and follow it up with your desired text. When I have been successful, the relevant icons lose their color, etc.

Anyway, what I did end up doing for the moment, which actually works well, is the following, should anyone care or have add'l thoughts...

Randy's site for emojis is a good one, so I went through and selected various emojis comparable to my current flairs.  I'm using Chrome, so on my bookmark bar I created a folder called "Cal icons" for quick access.  In the folder I have direct links to my selected emojis.  See the attached screenshot.

If I want to add a new calendar item, I click on my Cal icons folder, and select the icon I want to use, then when the link pops up, I simply hit "copy" (on the emojis site). Then I go to my calendar tab and simply paste the icon, followed by my desired text in the new calendar entry.  It's actually pretty quick.

I suppose one could create a mouse script for each icon, then associate that script in PhraseExpress, and assign a hot key, eg by hitting Ctrl-T or whatever, the script would execute, go to the site for the associated icon, hit copy, and automatically bring you to your calendar with a new calendar entry open. The manual approach is sufficiently quick, I'm not motivated to fool with it.  Still not giving up on PhraseExpress or a similar program, but at least I have an option I can live with...

I really like a lot of the emojis you picked out. I like the bookmark bar idea and am considering adapting it to lead to a file on my own disk that would contain the emojis I want, so I could do the copy/paste that I like. I like keeping stuff on my own computer if it's convenient.

I can see where PhraseExpress can come in handy too. I'd never heard of it before. I'm going to think about that the next time I wish for repeated quick access to something.

Thanks, Steve,

This will do for me as it works perfectly!
Not as smooth as eventflairs but goes to show its easy to implement if Google wants to.

Cheers!

The idea of creating a folder on your toolbar in Chrome and using the emojipedia icons to copy works great. You can then use more than one icon to your calendar events when you create them.. now to figure out a way to get them to appear when you create a calendar event that you want to have recurring... like birthdays, every year.....
Super creative ideas folks..   just wish we could keep the event flairs..  :(
Thanks to Sebastian for ALL his work with creating that feature in the first place.. too bad Google doesn't listen to their customers that have relied on it for years.

Can someone please provide instructions on how to use emojipedia icons step by step?  Seems like everyone confirms it works for now...

Thank you in advance!

Mmmh I'm thinking about creating a Chrome extension to replace the sidebar gadgets. I've seen extensions accessing the calendar, so it might be a viable option. Drawbacks: 1) only works on chrome and 2) only works on the browser where the extension is installed. It could still be an option. I'll keep you posted.

Parm just open the emojipedia website, find the image you want and and click the copy button on the web site. Then paste it onto your calendar. First open or create the event you want to paste it on. Then, paste the icon in the title area of the event - usually at the beginning before you start typing words. Then create your event and save it.

Thank you Kelliann...that is very easy but little extra steps as I have a very busy calendar and I used flairs to mark what was completed pending etc etc. but I am counting on Chrome extension thaSebastien mentioned and thinking about.  That would really help and will be a permanent solution.  You are all awesome!!!

Yes I agree with the limitations Seb but most of the people uses Chrome these days anyways and plus it is one time setup on all the PC if someone is using multiple PC to add the extension and then forget about it and I am pretty sure people wont mind if there is nominal fee for the extension since it will be so useful....wink wink...lol.

Thanks for the emoji idea! It's unfortunate we can't have something smoother, but hopefully this is simple enough that it resists Google's future tinkering.

Another idea along the lines of emoji:

There are a few Chrome extensions for copy/pasting emoji. Just one as an example: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/emoji-for-google-chrome/immhpnclomdloikkpcefncmfgjbkojmh?hl=en

Rather than bookmarking Emojipedia, this is a slightly faster option. Click emoji extension in the toolbar, select emoji, paste into Calendar.

The extension settings have a few options to speed things up: "Automatically copy emoji to clipboard when clicking" / "Automatically close window after clicking emoji"

Hopefully Sebastien can figure out an extension to let us use custom icon sets again, though. Godspeed!

What concerns me right now is being able to have emoji show up each time when you have a repeating item so you don’t have to add them individually. Flairs do that.

once you create an event in the google calendar and you have saved that event with your emoji icon in it.  THEN make it a recurring event..  it will copy the emoji icon to all the events in the series.
seems to work for me when I create recurring events that way.

Interesting update...

I unpacked the emoji extension I linked earlier (Emoji for Google Chrome -- https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/emoji-for-google-chrome/immhpnclomdloikkpcefncmfgjbkojmh?hl=en) and have been tinkering with the source.

It has a "Whitelist" option to replace emojis on any given domain (e.g. to choose Apple style, Google style, etc). So, I whitelisted calendar.google.com, and now by replacing the emoji in the style sheets that are inserted, you can work in custom emoji.

Example:

Stormtrooper replacing one of the emoji symbols: https://i.imgur.com/160mh50.png
Custom emoji in the new calendar: https://i.imgur.com/dHjwH5n.png

Thank you Mike for the update and it is great we have an extension that everyone can use in case we are pushed to upgraded calendar by google while Seb is working on the new custom extension for this family.

Can you please elaborate more on how to get the custom emojies in one place or create them?

Thank you in advance! 😊
