Hello.
My name is Bartek. This is my first post on this group.

My problem is that, I've succeeded to run Somagic SMI-2021CBE with easycap-somagic. I can successfuly do somagic-capture | mplayer and see output.

But now is the question. How can I create /dev/video* device file so I can use other software that streams video from it? There's no any file after running firmware upload and somagic-capture.

Other question will be how to have all 4 video files for all 4 channels but that's next story.

Thank you for any suggestions,
Bartek

After you plugged in and initialized the device, loaded all needed modules - /dev/video should be auto created.

Maybe there is something logged in dmesg?

Hi Bartek,

To get /dev/videoX you need to use the v4l driver (the driver creates the device file), not the userland application somagic-capture.

best regards,
Pedro

Only info that device was discovered. No errors there. I have obviously /dev/video0 but it's my built in laptop camera. But no new /dev/video

I don't get it.
Can you give me an example or point to some readings or exactly write what you mean?

Thank you all for responses.

You need to build and insert the kernel module to get something in /dev.

Tosiara,
I missed the "modules" word. What exactly do you mean? I followed instructions on
http://code.google.com/p/easycap-somagic-linux/wiki/GettingStarted
this is the only thing I did.

Now I get it! I'm stupid regarding all those kernels and modules. I just don't understand this. I suggest to put some info at the top of main page that building and running module is essential to have separate video device.
The page describing building the module has no word about it. One should already know that building module is needed. And I suppose all linux hackers already know that. But I'm ordinary user and don't know that.

Anyway, thank you ALL for responses. Now I will download and build module from sources.
Greetings,
Bartek

Could you provide you output of "uname -a"?

Hi.
I'm using soft taken from

My uname

Linux  3.11.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 9 16:20:46 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Tosiara, I don't use module. I just stick grabber into USB port and run steps from page

I think that I should compile a module. Or is it available from somewhere, ready to use?

There is no pre-built module for download because it depends on the kernel you re running.

Not sure how that goes with Ubuntu, but I have successfully built the new module for openSUSE 3.11 kernel

Hi.
I've build module but no progress. I do modprobe without errors. lsmod shows saa7115 module on the list.
When I plug my easycap device I get the same output in dmesg.

[ 7673.729603] usb 2-1.1: New USB device found, idVendor=1c88, idProduct=0007
[ 7673.729608] usb 2-1.1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 7673.729611] usb 2-1.1: Product: SM-USB 007
[ 7673.729613] usb 2-1.1: Manufacturer: Somagic, Inc.
[ 7673.729616] usb 2-1.1: SerialNumber: SMBL007

Nothing more. I can see that your module tries to locate firmware. I don't have any of these entries in dmesg.

:(

Could you post complete sequence of command that you are doing?
How did you built the module? Where it is located? What is PWD? When you use modprobe and when insmod? Is there any errors about symbols in dmesg when you do insmod?
Both.
