Good day everyone,

I am having the following problem customizing the DSpace interface.  I stop the DSpace instance, then I put DSpace in developer mode successfully.  I am not able to access the localhost:4000 via the browser.  The page partially loads with a "500 Service Unavailable" page.  See screenshot below.

Please advise what may be the issue and how I can rectify it.

Regards
Sonia

Your access by port 4000 is Ok. The 500 error is aproblem with communication between frontend and backend. There are many reasons for this, but first look at the error outputs log.

Check the parameters in same config.yml. Set the same config of production instance.
Set envirioment for yarn:

export NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS="/etc/ssl/yourcert.pem"
export NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED='0'
export NODE_OPTIONS="--max-old-space-size=4096"

For more on the 500 error (which often is a general communication problem between the frontend and backend) you should use our Troubleshooting Guide: https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/Troubleshoot+an+error#Troubleshootanerror-DSpace7.x(orabove)

It's likely you are hitting one of the "Common Installation Issues" listed here (but to understand which one it is, you should use the troubleshooting guide): https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Installing+DSpace#InstallingDSpace-CommonInstallationIssues

Thank you both Leandro and Tim.  I will have a look at your suggestions and hopefully I will find a solution.

  Hello again,

I've gone through the documentation and did the yarn test:rest.  Here is the result

image.png

The line in the screenshot above, "dspaceServer" property matches UI's "rest" config? false
Which files do I need to compare to match the "dspaceServer" and "rest" configs so that the result will be "true"

The troubleshooting guide also suggested I check the browser for error when I try to access http://localhost:4000

This is a screenshot of the "Console" tab
image.png

This is a screenshot of the "Network" tab

I am seeing references to "HTTPS" in the console tab all though I am trying to access "http://localhost:4000" .  I should mention that I am not using "HTTPS" for communication between the client and the server.  I am using the host file with success because the server will only be accessed within the network by the client machine.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Sonia

This might be a bug in the "yarn rest:test" script as a different person reported this same issue.  It seems that sometimes the script sometimes wrongly says
"dspaceServer" property matches UI's "rest" config? false

As I said to that person, I'd appreciate it if someone can log this as a bug and give us some steps to try to reproduce it.  It sounds like it either that check has broken, or there are specific scenarios where it's not working properly.

As for the errors from your Browser's Console..that "No _links section found.." error is described in our Common Installation Issues at https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Installing+DSpace#InstallingDSpace-%22No_linkssectionfoundat...%22errorfromUserInterface
