I found

at Menards, is there a reason this won't work for laser cutting?  I realize it's surface may not be perfect and there may be internal voids.  For the project I'm planning some of that would just add to the charm.

If it would work I'm planning on ordering a few sheets, they ask $13 for packaging so the marginal cost goes down as you buy more sheets.  I'd guess the edges and corners may get some damage in packaging and shipping.

The laser works best if the wood is consistent. Which is a bit of an oxymoron, I know. If you hit voids, you get scorching, if you hit knots, you end up having to go back with an exacto knife or coping saw if you don't want to recut the part. The Menard's stuff will cut, it'll just give you more headache/waste than nicer stock. I'm okay with you getting it for your projects because you know what you're getting into and what you're using it for, but I avoid it for the laser room supply because I want to make life easy on people.

I can also show you what we've done with matboard, cardboard, and acrylic if you want to explore different feel and look and practice using the laser while wood stock is scarce! I'll be around Saturday afternoon, still. I THINK I'll have the laser back up and running by 2 and can do training. I'll give more details in another thread to the group.

1/8 Baltic birch bbb at woodsmith store was like $15.50 for 5x5. More expensive, but will probably cut better than the generic stuff from the link. (Based on hearsay, not actual experience)

In my experience of buying lumber at Menards, you want to go to the lumberyard and hand pick, because there may be some bad / damaged stock. We had to dig through several bundles to get a few usable sheets.

James,

Menard's website states "free delivery to store" + $79.00 delivery from store to the space.

I'm not seeing the $13 additional for packaging (but I didn't call them).

If you still want to order them at your cost (after reading David's message regarding picking) I'd be willing to pick them up from the store to save you the $79 (-$5 for gas?).

By the time Menard's gets it to their store (of my choice) it would be March 17. That date must be just shy of Liberty's estimated delivery date.

When you chose "ship to store" you get hit with a $13 packaging fee during checkout.  I can haul lumber this big and larger, the issue is the local menard's don't have any so I get what they ship.  I may order a couple of sheets for my personal project and see how it goes.  Rather than haul it full size I may just bring some horses and cut it in the parking lot LOL.  Even if I want to haul fill size we have a stretch E-150 so I can haul 4x8 sheets of ply inside my van.

Prob the biggest issue you  will see with the menards plywood that thin is delamination when laser cutting. that wood isnt really designed to be made into small pieces and a lot of times itll come apart. I would def suggest hitting the woodsmith store to get it for a slightly higher cost if that is something that might effect your project. Laser cutting also does rely it on it being flat which may or may not be what you get when they ship it in. Honestly its not much more then liberty if its 15.50 and you get to see it before you buy it. for most projects i do i would pay the extra couple bucks to see the product.

The problem is Liberty doesn't have it.  Have been looking for alternate suppliers.  I was unaware Woodsmith even sold wood (their website sucks).

I thought Liberty was talking June for 1/8 ply.

yeah woodsmith's webpage is weird because for a long time after the magazine and store split they didnt have control of the page from the store side. Liberty supplies most of it also for the woodsmith, they have tons and tons of wood. so you pay a little markup but also get to see it before delivery.

I haven't done any woodworking that uses a table-saw in over 30 years.  Just deck and dock type of work.  The lake models I'm planning on laser cutting happened because a guy at the lake generated a topo map of the lake bottom with a GPS depth finder and I got the urge.

I've done the parking lot cutting more than once.

I don't recall if Menard's does it or not but, most places will sell damaged goods for 50%+ - but, you have to ask someone who has a larger nametag than the floor grunts.

I don't know how many bags of top soil, cedar mulch, sand, potting soil, cement mix, fertilizer, etc. (anything in a bag) that I've purchased that had a hole in it. They just want it gone rather than having to pay someone to either patch it or dispose of it.

James,

If you didn't know that the  Woodsmith Store sold lumber then DON'T GO INTO THE BACK ROOM!

I can't leave there without buying a nice piece of lumber or six.

Lumber doesn't have that attraction to me, my normal addiction is boats so it's worse.

Too bad your not into both :) you could get into something like collecting Riva's. Though rocking around the lake in an Aquarama wouldnt be the worst thing in the world haha

I love the look of a wood boat, but have no desire to take on the maintenance of one.

If you have the topographical map you can possibly 3d print it as well.

That was the prototype.  I'm considering attempting to CNC it out of a larger block of wood also in the future.  My nephew has slabs I could use (ur

In addition to the bathmetry data (underwater elevation), you could marry this with the topographic data that the state of iowa has.  You can add a filament change at layer height so that you can have blue water and green or brown land.  I took elevation data from around lake red rock and printed one of the campgrounds for my wife as an anniversary gift since that was where we got engaged.  Unfortunately I couldn't get bathymetry data for the lake (I emailed the Army Corps of Engineers and they didn't have any data) so the water surface was flat but I had ground elevation.

geodata.iowa.gov has geospatial data.

That would be a good addition to the model.  I'll have to look into that.  Generating the bathymetry data involved manually tracing a jpg generated by the depth sounder (the actual data was proprietary and I couldn't find a reader), but it was close enough for these kind of toys.

Regarding the 1/8 ply. If you can find it at Woodsmith I would suggest picking it up if you need a sheet or 2. Woodsmith will have better availability since they have a standing order with Liberty and will get first supply. I was warned by the rep at Liberty that the price of Baltic Birch will be increasing substantially.

Along with ALL lumber prices.

Thanks for the news.

I've been trying to post on here with no luck.  Please let me hijack this post, since you are the woodsmiths. I'm trying to find a woodworker that can rout out a 1/2" x 1/16" relief on the outer surface of two maple bass drum hoops. Any takers? Thanks,  -Lonnie

Hi Kathleen,

Let's take this 'private' as this thread is rather involved (as you can see).

I'll send a message to your email address.
