Hi all,

Can anyone advise? I'm looking for something small and light with a long enough cable to charge the Garmin and maybe lights during long rides... until I decide/invest in dynamo technology!
Can anyone recommend something?
(Soon please - I need for 300km Vatternrundan!)

Thanks,

Sara

Hi Sara

I use this to keep my Garmin charged on long rides.  It's v small and light and has high capacity.

Juucee power bank is a good, small, lightweight and low-cost option. Got me to Paris:

Hi Sara, I use an Anker Astra Mini which is described as “lipstick-sized”.  All I know is that I’ve had it for two years, it holds its charge extremely well, is good for fully recharging my Garmin 705 three times on one charge, it costs about £12 and it comes in Dulwich Paragon blue.

Sara, I think it largely depends on whether you want to provide back-up power for your LED lights or not.  The small power packs cost about £10 and store around 2500+ mAh and this will be more than adequate for your Garmin, which only needs a top-up to do 300 km.  For around £20 you can get 10x the energy storage, 25000 mAh albeit in a larger device (but they don't look too bulky compared to the other clutter you'll be carrying on the bike).  I don't know for long this extra energy would power your particular lights.  However, if you check your LED light power consumption in mA, then the approximate run time can be calculated by division.

Thank you Mr Duhan.  We really should set up a science for cyclists lesson - Cadence could host straight after Watt bike or yoga...!  ;)

Hi Sara,

If you have a dynamo hub, also important to know which power packs will charge directly from the hub, as a cache battery. They can then also be used in your back pocket for day rides and I have several different makes.

http://www.cyclingabout.com/list-of-hub-dynamo-power-supplies-for-usb-devices/ - useful website for hub dynamo gadgets.

This is a list and short review of dynamo hub charging units for USB devices. I have a more comprehensive resource which overviews dynamo hubs, solar panels and ...

If you want something that comes with a bike attachment, this is one of the few out there.

Interesting thread. I'm going to opt for the excellent £9 charging device and 20 rolls of black insulating tape to attach it to my bike. The insulating tape will have a secondary function in a yet to be identified emergency.

By the way, any one interested in half a pack (ie one) 11 speed Wiperman spare chain link? £8.

I got an orange Jackery off Amazon - and amazingly managed to record the whole of Vatternrundan plus the ride there and back - just short of 330km - with a top up in the middle.
Worked fine - just need to mount the garmin upside down to fit the lead in - and watch for any wobble which seems to make the device want to power down.
After Libby's experience at KotD and various posts on Audax Facebook group, I also wrapped some cling film around the port and the Jackery itself (in bento box / top tube bag with energy bars) - it kept coming loose but avoided rain in the electrics!
