Try new DiskPiano app on Your Disklavier – Looking for Beta Testers 😉

Hi folks! 

I’ve built a new app called DiskPiano that lets your Disklavier play thousands of exclusive songs (that I bet you’ve never heard on your piano yet!), including lots of Christmas music you can enjoy with family and kids. 

If you’d like to try it, just search “DiskPiano” on the App Store — it’s iOS-only for now (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/diskpiano/id6755051098).

Please note that the app has been tested on an older 1997 Yamaha C1 Disklavier (DKC100) using both a WIDI Master and a USB-MIDI cable, and it works well. But if you run into any issues or bugs, please let me know — I’m looking for beta testers! 😉

And if you have any suggestions or feature ideas, please let me know — I’d love your feedback!

Two questions:

1. Does this require only a Bluetooth connect?

2. I have an Apple Airport router directly connected into my DKC850. I’ve got a ton of music files on my iPad where I used to be able to Airplay to the Airport and see rhe piano play as well as hear drums, strings, vocals, etc but after not having used it for 6 months, now it doesn’t seem like I can do that anymore?

We tried the 12 min free trial.  Interesting but not working well, some keys not releasing on time ended up playing songs out of tune or ' mushy'.

If it was working well, it would be pricey at $350 a year.

I used the app with my 1990 MX80 disklavier and I love the collection! Can’t wait till tomorrow to listen for 15 minutes again. 

Please consider offering a cheaper subscription. If it’s possible to listen for 15 minutes a day, it should also be possible to listen for 1 hour a day for a lower price than the current unlimited subscription.

I have the app DiskPiano, just downloaded it and recently created some midi files.  I have a Mark 4

I uploaded these tracks to Disk Piano and it plays the piano without vocals or other instruments 

.what am I doing wrong?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  New to all this!

The developer (Ludovic) will probably have to comment on specific requirements for playing homemade content in his DiskPiano app.

Have you tried playing your files into the Disklavier using other apps (such as Sweet MIDI Player) or PC software like Van Basco's Karaoke Player?

How did you create the MIDI files you're having trouble with? MIDI files don't support vocals (except for scat sounds like doo-doo-doo).

If you share one of the problem MIDI files to the group, maybe one of us can take a look at it.

Are other files with synthesized accompaniment (including Yamaha's own PianoSoft Plus content) playing OK on your Mark IV?

Hi Mark,

I guess to my stupidity I thought if say I took an Elton John song to a mp3 to a midi file an uploaded it to Disk Piano it would play on my Disklavier Mark IV as I have a midi in/out connection to a c cable to my MacBook Air.

Audio -> MIDI conversions require artificial intelligence. That process has improved a lot over the past few years but isn't to the point where it can do what you're asking yet (at least not well).

MIDI files do not support vocals, though.  You could extract the vocals (and optionally the backup instrumentation) to a WAV file using GAudio Studio:  https://www.gaudiolab.com/gaudio-studio
and sync that file of accompanying audio with the MIDI file you've already made by using MID2PianoCD:  https://www.kinura.net/mid2pianocd/

Lots of experimentation will be required, and the results will likely not sound as good as professionally-arranged content that's been specifically designed for your Disklavier:

Note: you can convert Yamaha's newer PianoSoft Audio files intended for Enspire to PianoSoft Plus Audio files for your Mark IV using MID2PianoCD.  That might be a more immediate path to success.

The approximate steps:

1. Purchase the PianoSoft Audio album and download the files; each track will have a .mid and .wav (or .mp3) file pair
2. Open MID2PianoCD and add the MIDI files to the list of files to convert (the accompaniment files don't show up in the list but will be found and used if only the extension differs (.mid -> .wav/.mp3))
3. Under Advanced, set the Source Velocity Profile to Disklavier
4. Set the output format to Yamaha Disklavier (Pianosoft Plus Audio)
5. Set the audio file type to WAV (MP3 is not reliable for PianoSoft Plus Audio due to its lossy compression)
6. Enable the "Prepend format identifier to output filenames" checkbox so that the original accompaniment filenames don't collide with the output files
7. Click "Start Conversion"
8. Burn the resulting WAV files to a CD-R for your Mark IV, or store them on the internal hard drive, etc.
