Hey John, 

I think it would be valuable to call out the MarkIV even more prominently than it is already.  Almost all of the details can be removed for the MarkIV since it natively supports this file type.  Drag it to the piano, and done.

But, as others have mentioned, this is a fantastic document!  (and the music is great too!)

Hello All and thanks so much for all your input. It would be great if I owned every model of Disklavier but I only have my lovely C1X DKC800 E3. Therefore I rely on you guys to help me out so thanks for that.  I will be updating the User Guide to reflect Kevin's comment on the MKIV native file compatibility - thanks Kevin. I'll also work out a way to give you all access to the sample files to play with. They are too large to upload so I'll find a link for you.  Kind regards, John

Attached is the listing with the Album and song sort in tab 1.

Tab 2 has Albums sorted by Genre
Tab 3 has Songs sorted by Genre

Within each Genre the data is alphabetical.

Hope this helps you zero in on your desires!

Now if I can figure all this out for my Disklavier Mark IV!!!

So if I order on a CD, can that be put directly into my DKC850 and it will play piano and the other instruments? (Have amp & synthesizer bolted to underside of E1 grand). I read the document with plugging into analog port via iPad but would rather just put in CD if that’s an option?

Hey Arnold – You and Geoff are in a battle to the death with this spreadsheet! 😊 Thank you so much. You should just be able to load the files directly into the MKIV via USB or straight onto the hard drive. Read the guide though.

Hello John,

Playing on the CD in the DKC850  is really easy! Simply burn the album or files onto a CD BUT make sure you burn an AUDIO CD and NOT a DATA CD. Let me know how you get on.

 

In truth we are trying to move away from CD’s because you have to change them every 40 minutes or so and its not easy to create playlists etc. But please do what makes you happy! 😊

Arthur,

John's document is a really great read, but, since you have a Mark IV, don't sweat the details.  Play the files on your MarkIV just like you would play any other files, and all should be well.  The MarkIV recognizes this format natively.  If you have any questions about how you might get the files onto your piano, let me know and I'll be happy to help.

I really appreciate the input. I will make a purchase and see if I can figure it out.

Like many others with the Mark IV my original remote that came with the piano is completely dead, even when I try to put in new batteries. Yamaha really missed the boat on that particular piece of equipment. Thank goodness for you!   So I use either your app, the phone app, or the pc simulation on my PC/laptop.  

Let me fiddle with it first and see how I do, and if I run into challenges I will reach out to you Kevin.

It's nice to see other people interested in Disklavier support! I have a MX100 in really nice shape with a DKC-850.  

I might be a little late to the  conversation as I'm missing any discussion regarding this,  but I'm wondering how I might go about getting any of the albums. I can burn them to cd myself.

I'm a little confused, although for me, that is a normal state...

So I downloaded those "sample" files that had been posted (Bring Him Home, Music Of The Night, You Raise Me Up), and even as WAV files, they sound like crap on my PC but after reading the document, I understand why, so not a big deal.

And if I order some tracks from that list, they would also come as WAV files and sound like crap on my PC but understand they were not DESIGNED to sound good on my PC.

So far so good?

So if I take those 3 tracks (WAV) and write them onto a CD with my Windows PC, can I take that CD and put it into my DKC850 and expect it to work and sound fantastic, where anything I order would sound equivalently fantastic?

I've made progress with the two files John provided to us.  Downloaded, moved to USB stick, plugged in to MKIV and use virtual PRC app on lapttop to find and Play!  Voila!

I've just a couple of specific questions on moving and subsequently accessing the files.  Can you kindly email me at arthur...@gmail.com and I will be as succinct and specific as possible?

Hello Confused One!

Re-reading the ‘HOW TO’ guide will always help.

 

Of course these files are not designed to be listened to on a PC – they will sound awful!! They are for the piano.

You have a DKC850 so you have two choices:

  1. Burn the files onto a CD and play them. Remember to burn an AUDIO CD and NOT a Data CD. That’s the o\ld fashioned way but it will work fine.
  2. Copy the files onto a device (laptop, iPad etc) using a cable, plug it into the ANALOG MIDI inputs on the back of the DKC850. Press play and enjoy. I use iTunes to store and organise all my music files.

Hi John-

I bought 4 CDs from your link via eBay.   Andrew, the seller, emailed me and offered to send the .wav files as well. So he did ship out the CDs and also emailed links to the files. I then burned the files to audio CDs and they played great on my E3 DKC800.

Hi Joe – I started off with CD’s from Andrew but since we learned to make the files compatible with most Disklaviers, I now only have files. Much easier on iTunes and to stream them to the piano.

I'm not familiar with "Mark IV" and all the other stuff, I just know I have a DKC800, so I burn a CD, throw it in, and see what happens. If the anticipated magic happens, I can see placing an order for  more, thanks for this resource!

Hmmm, it appears I need additional instructions, perhaps not as simple as I thought.

So Windows 10 laptop, took blank CD-R and put it in laptop, fired up File Explorer, selected the 3 WAV files, pasted to CD drive. It appears to have written them successfully as I can see them when its done via File Explorer.

Eject CD, take to DKC800 and insert it, use SELECT to choose CD, the display shows "No Album" and I can go no further with it?

You've burned a "data" cd.  It contains a file system, and some files (which happen to be .WAV files).

You need to burn an "audio" cd.

Tried it again, was sure to specify AUDIO CD, same results.

BTW, mine is a DKC850, not DKC800 if that matters.

Great to see you helping each other out with your various skills! 
So... these files. If you were to burn them onto a CD (Audio NOT Data) you would have something that Yamaha used to call a 'PianoSoft Plus Audio' disc. Shove it in your piano CD player and it plays original artist music plus real live piano accompaniment. Its been a little while since I did this and I cant remember if you have to have the files in a folder or not. The DKC 850/800  in particular can be a bit fussy with CD's and the controls don't always do what you expect. Not Yamaha's finest hour! I often ended up burning multiple times before the unit would play them. Of course it also depends on the quality of your burning hardware and software. Anyway, if CD's float your boat then who am I to say different.
The files on their own are easier to play and store and of course you can stream to the piano. Plus you will never spill any wine getting up to change discs! So many more options. 

Once you have your Disklavier tamed and it knows who is in charge, it will be set for life. Mine gets powered up almost every day. I grab my Ipad full of songs (sorted into playlists etc) select the Airplay option (because that's what I use) and press play. Admittedly it did take me a lot of trial and error to get this far and that's what I've tried to put into the HOW TO document.

There's no notion of folder structure on audio CDs (Google "red book audio cd standard" for the details), nor is there a filesystem at all, only logical tracks.  (The *.CDA "files" you see if you put an audio CD in a computer's optical drive are not files but rather a "helpful" abstraction concocted by Windows that isn't really very useful; CDA stands for CD Audio).

Like John D., I prefer not to use optical discs anymore unless absolutely necessary.  John suggests using iTunes as one's music jukebox software on Windows.  That's a reasonable idea, but iTunes is overkill for the task, can be misconfigured to do undesirable things (such as convert your WAV files to MP3 files upon import), and is generally regarded as a bloated, resource-intensive pig of an application.

For playing a library of player piano tracks, I would instead recommend Foobar2000:  https://www.foobar2000.org/  It's more compact than iTunes, snappier to use, more customizable, and it supports a wider range of audio formats, including FLAC, and you can convert among formats right in this program.  Converting Pianosoft Plus Audio WAV files to FLAC format is beneficial because 1) it reduces the amount of storage space required to about 40% of the original, and 2) you can tag FLAC files with full ID3v2 metadata, just like MP3 files, which is more attractive than trying to pack title/pianist/composer/album info into the filename of a WAV file.

I believe Foobar2000 permits editing the metadata right in the program (as does iTunes), but a more versatile program for tagging FLAC and MP3 files is MP3Tag:  https://www.mp3tag.de/en/   MP3Tag makes it really easy to tag large groups of files and perform nifty transformations such as converting filenames -> tags, tags -> filenames, automatically numbering tracks, etc.  I use it not just for maintaining my player piano tracks but also for the rest of my (human-listenable) music library.

Both Foobar2000 and MP3Tag are donation-supported and highly recommended.

Morning John

I downloaded your trial files and put them on a USB stick as received.   They showed up on DKVBrowser on my MKIV and played without problem.   However, after I purchased a number of albums, I put them on a USB stick under a song file header eg Charlotte Church - Voice of an Angel, but these don’t show up at all.   I also tried using a portable hard drive through the USB port – without success.   Do you, or anyone, have any idea why this is?

Hi Owen – I’m glad you got the files to play. I don’t know the answer to this but I know a man who probably can! Can you help Kevin?

One thing I do know is when the albums arrive, they are normally in a shell folder. Perhaps you need to take the folder with the actual files inside out of the shell. You may have to rename it for convenience. Slap me if you want but I assume you have unzipped the folder??  (ouch!)

Very reasonable question, so no slap.   Yes, all unzipped and copied into separate folders under a file heading.   I’m going to try a different USB stick as I know all USB sticks are not supported by Yamaha.   Not sure if there is a size limitation on USB sticks; I can’t find any reference to this in the MKIV books.

Not yet.   However, using a different USB stick, smaller size too, I have an album playing without problem.   So either it’s something to do with the make of USB stick or there is a size limit on the USB port.

Hi John

If only!!   I searched the Yamaha site and couldn’t find any specific reference to a maximum USB size for the MKIV but I did find a couple of tables that listed different compatible USB makes and sizes and noted that none were over 32Gb.   So  I found a very old 32GB USB stick and put all the albums on it and I’m pleased to say that when I plugged it in they all showed up and are playing well.

I am opening the excel file a year later.  I did a couple of additional sorts on the music and re-attaced my file to this email.

I have a question that came up as I was looking through the files.....  There is an entire genre missing; Jazz!  Is there a place where I can get some to the classic jazz songs by the many famous artists over the years?  Joe Sample, Ramsey Lewis, Herbie Hancock, David Benoit, The list would go on forever of course.  Hoping you might know!

I am going to hijack this thread although I have a somewhat related topic.  Two part questions for you disklavier gurus:

1.  What do folks nowadays use to play midi files on their disklaviers via iPad?

2. I installed last night an MDBT-01 bluetooth adapter onto my E3/DKC-800 and used SuperScore app to play some free in-app midis. It played successfully.

Then, I downloaded some free classical midis from Yamahaden and tried to use the Home Concert Extreme app.  The app won’t play the piano keys but the accompaniment can be heard on the piano speakers.  If I press the virtual keypad on the ipad, my actual piano keys work. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

I have two answers here, both of them have been successful with my Yamaha E3 grand and DKC850 disklavier.

1. I use PianoStream which uses an Apple device (I use an iPad but others have also used iPhones). They have a Facebook group with incredible levels of support. It has two modes: analog and digital. The digital mode plays music via the Bluetooth connection (ie, the MD-BT01 you referenced is what they recommend and I use), which is piano "solo" music. The digital mode uses the full MIDI capabilities of your disklavier including the piano of course plus strings, drums, horns, etc, and some also including voice. This requires a connection to your disklavier from a router (I picked up a used Apple Airport Express on Ebay, works wonderfully), and to AirPlay to the Airport Express.

PianoStream also comes with a large library of both digital and analog files. It's free to demo and see how it works but to access the full capabilities, it's a subscription with a discount for an annual fee instead of monthly.

2. On that same iPad, I use the builtin Music app. If you do a Google search, you can find a ton of free Yamaha MIDI files for download; I've found classical, a collection of ragtime/jazz, etc. I've also got a lot of things via a bud I was kindly introduced to, at a very reasonable price that are full Yamaha MIDI including piano of course plus instruments plus voice, including soundtracks from many musicals like Chicago, Phantom, MamaMia, etc. Convert to WAV (there are many utilities to do this), transfer to your iPad, AirPlay your iPad to the Airport Express, and you are in business.
