Dear All,
I have an HDD comes from DVR, and some recorded files are deleted,
any way, I make an image using DDI on other HDD (0 Unread sectors)
but when I tried to recover files using R-Studio, Icare or GetDataBack
I cannot get anything, just some swf files with big capacity (more than 1GB)
but corrupted (I mean cannot be played)
so Is there any special software that I can use it for such issue...
Thanks a lot for your support...

Sincerely,

+1 for DVD Examiner. It’s a great program, but not a cheap one.

Many DVR’s do not save files as standard video files. If you think about it, a DVR has to record from say 24 channels all at the same time. So it uses codecs to manage these recordings mostly as H.264 files, so you do occasionally need specialized software to open them.

Hi Rabih,

DVR Examiner is a nice program with a great interface and it covers a pretty wide range of file systems. The only problem is that it has a pretty spendy per use license and you may have to sell of a vital organ if you want to purchase the full program. Another program that I have had success with is HX-Recovery (http://www.hxdvr.com/) and it costs far less. The interface isn't as polished as DVR examiner and, at least the last time I used it, you could not preview the video files in HX the way you can in DVR Examiner. If you get stuck the makers of HX will remote into your system and help out.

Many DVRs use weird proprietary file systems that have no support in any computer operating systems. Open the drive up in a hex editor and scroll down a bit and you will usually see the name of the file system mentioned, such as, DHFS, RSFS, WFS, etc.

Another reason standard data recovery programs are unable to carve the video files from these drives is because the video files are multiplexed together and are not contiguous.

Good luck.

Hi there Amarbir!

And,...Happy Birthday!

The downfall of HX recovery is that there is no way to preview the files that it detects in it's scan. The good thing is that the price for the full license for unlimited uses and unlimited updates is about $600(US) which is what DVR examiner charges for a single use license. The full license for DVR Examiner is about $60,000 (US). DVR examiner will allow you to preview files that it detects even in the trial version.

I only see one or two DVR recoveries a year so I can't really justify spending the money on DVR Examiner. So far, every DVR recovery that I have done has been recoverable using HX-recovery even on 2 of them that DVR Examiner could not detect type of file system. If you are not seeing any files show up in the scan you can stop it part way through and select a different filesystem and rescan.

Another major difference that I have noticed in these two programs is that HX tends to find some files that are partially overwritten. For example, you can scan the drive with DVR examiner and you may see a 5 day span with footage from multiple cameras and then you scan the same drive with HX you may see some days outside of that 5 day span but none of the files play. I am guessing that the way that the program carves those files it finds fragments of files with headers and assumes that they are complete when they are incomplete....but that's just a guess.

Another thing to be aware of with HX is that it recovers out the individual video clips as raw H.246 files. These files cannot be played with most video players. You can play them using VLC player but you need to tweak the settings in order to get them to play. There is a good tutorial on how to do so here:

The developer of HX is a really nice guy and he is also available to help out with recoveries if you get stuck.

By the way, I have really enjoyed watching your posts about data recovery on Facebook. Keep up the great work!

I hope this info is helpful. Let me know if you have more questions and I will do my best to answer them.

Best regards!
