Hey folks,

A kiting meet up was discussed at the P2 virtual meeting on Tuesday the 19th. We talked about this Saturday afternoon at Broughton Beach but winds are looking pretty light via Windy (~1-2 mph sustained). I've never kited there, so not sure if that will be too light.. I may give it a shot anyway. If there are other kiting sites near the Portland area that may have more favorable wind that day feel free to drop some info.

I sailed on that stretch of the Columbia for 7 years... You should get very consistent afternoon wind blasting towards the airport on sunny days. One theory amongst sailors is that a massive thermal forms above the airport every afternoon after the tarmac heats up enough. It sucks in all the surrounding air. Mornings are less predictable, but usually pretty calm. There’s typically some mechanical turbulence coming off the Washington side, but it doesn’t reach very far across the river. Conditions on the Oregon side are pretty laminar.

I think that's a great idea!  I haven't checked weather yet.  Pilots used to meet on a weekly basis to kite.  It would be a great way to stay current and meet up with other pilots ... Also a good alternative plan if it's not flyable.  I would imagine winds along the columbia would be as good as anywhere in the flatlands during light days.

Hey Nick,
I thought I was going to try to get some air time tomorrow but that isn't happening.  If you decide to head up by the airport to kite shoot me a message and I'll join you if I can.  I'm likely to be free for a bit after 2, and be right in the area already.  Feel free to shoot me a text.  503.481.0158

Winds look like they’re from the wrong direction. Broughton takes N/NW up to almost full west wind. Wind tomorrow is south according to my forecast.

In summer I was there a few times.

Was oncall Tuesday and actually got called 😕 had to miss the fun...

If anyone does go kite today in the Portland area I recommend trying Altamont Park.

I could do some kiting at Altamont.  I have kid duty, but it's nearby and they can run around.  I think it may be light but the views are nice.  If anyone is going up there I can at least stop by for a bit.

I like the Altamont pivot. I’ll be down there around 12:30.

Kiting report.  Myself and Nick got plenty of much needed practice on our forward launches in various directions.  At first there were a lot of spectators disappointed with the show.  They were expecting us to fly high, but instead watched us aimlessly running around trying to keep our wings overhead.  Eventually we did launch and top land.  Peak of lift was 652 feet MSL (about 20 Briskey units AGL).  It was a nice way to spend part of the afternoon with Sunshine, nice views and my first forward launches on the Alpina!  My son even waited over an hour to ask when we are heading home.  That’s a win for this afternoon!
