I want to have workshops and lunch and learns at my future coworking space. I plan on charging a small fee for lunch and learns ($5). Do you pay the speakers or in exchange for speaking, or do they get to promote their business for exchange for doing the lunch and learn.

Thanks,

Angela

I think offering exposure as a means of payment is setting yourself up for the wrong kind of talks, even though it’s clear at the price point that you’re not looking to make a profit off the events.

We’re working on the same kind of series and pulling from the membership to talk about things they’re interested in. If we were charging for anything, we’d probably cover the speaker’s lunch or something like that. We’re focusing heavily on each member supporting the others as a way to growing the community’s ‘connective tissue.’

This, 1000000000x.

We do a monthly Show & Tell, a semi-montly Lunch & Learn, and a few other related formats. In all cases, we've had WAY better response and success when the message comes from a fellow member than from an outside "vendor" of sorts.

It also keeps you from getting into the "manager" mindset  (source), trying to make yourself the provider of value and instead, making it clear that fellow-members of the community are the reason to be there.

I have had 4 "Lunch & Learns" so far....NO, I do not pay the speakers.

I also pay for the Lunch and the Seminar is free.  I try to get "sponsors" for lunch, but, Pizza Pizza is cheap when I have to pay.  :-)

The speakers have an opportunity to get more business...

We often include "outside" speakers in our programming, since there is great talent and experience that exists our community, too. We never pay them, though - but we do permit them to charge. Then it's up to the members to decide if it's worthwhile. (some of these sessions also include non-members as participants - i.e., are public facing).

Hi Angela,

Our coworking space HQ Raleigh http://hqraleigh.com hosts Lunch and Learns very often. The speakers are either, sponsors, partners or community members. We work off of a membership program that varies in prices and services. Our community members are often local businesses that want to be involved but either don't need access to the coworking space or aren't startups but still want to be involved in the community and with events. These community members pay between $300-$600 per year depending on their package. In conjunction with your question though, we never pay our speakers or charge our members per lunch. The lunch and learns are part of the monthly or annual membership fee. You can check out our pricing and designated resources on our website.

Best,

HQ Raleigh Team

Thanks Raleigh Team, I like the idea of including the cost in the members' membership.
