Hi there,
I am extensively testing Mastodon (something a lot like twitter, but based on FOSS, decentralized: anybody can run an instance where people host their accounts, and the instance connects to a "Fediverse" aka a Federation of servers using the same software, et voilà, you get Twitter, but better, that passed the half-million users worldwide recently).

Are there other members of this group looking forward to opening a coworking dedicated instance?
Do you think that could be a cool service to offer on coworking.org?

I am @sh...@mastodon.social if you wanna join and discuss this there.
-Y.

I recently joined a custom Mastadon server that has a funny tweak: you're not allowed to use the letter "E" or any character variation on it.

It's a silly constraint that leads to some rather clever writing. Not something I've really spent much time with, but it reminds me of some of the early internet communities that I joined in that it's relatively small and the ability to create these special sub communities is kinda like how forums have sub-forums, allowing more focused conversations to thrive.

Would be fun to see something like this set up for coworking. I presume someone has to pay for the server to keep it running, right? Or is there a way to run one for free?

Yes, I know some early members of the Oulipo instance :)
Hosting and bandwidth costs, even limited, are to be expected. Most important resource is time from a volunteer sysadmin (at least one).
Pretty much sure e.g. coworking.ch could cover for the very limited hosting costs. Do we have a sysadmin volunteering? ;)

An instance where you can't technically post a toot with "co-working" in it? ^^ #deathtothehyphen
