Commcare Local Install

Hi,

It was amazing to find Commcare having tried out other similar products. 

Our intention is to use Commcare for College's Sociology Dept on issues like surveys of staff & students  but in order to use  it we need to have it installed locally.

So we visited this link:

Then proceeded to follow all the instructions.

But the problem came after

Then we have tried all ways to start it like, runserver 0.0.0.0:8000 but we just cant get it to run.

What is puzzling more is the line in red above because the script clearly shows that couchdb-lucene in use should be v0.8.0.

Please help. We really need to try this product.

Hi Tamira

We don't actually use lucene any longer so you can ignore that process. It's a bit hard to debug without any log output. 

What output do you get from running 'python manage.py runserver'?

Hi ,

Thanks for the fast response. No errors on runserver.

Django version 1.8, using settings 'settings'

Starting development server at http://127.0.0.1:8000/

Quit the server with CONTROL-C.

But when I go to to the ip: 192.168.1.116:8000 there is nothing.

If you want to connect to there server via the server's IP you should bind the django process either to that IP or all IP's. Try 'python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:8000'

Also, when you say 'there is nothing' do you mean the browser can't connect or that you get a blank page or what?

You may also want to check that you're firewall is allowing connections on port 8000.

Hey,

I would recommend following the developer setup instructions in the README first and then moving onto a production setup. It looks like the production instructions are not up to date anymore. We've moved to using salt and ansible to configure our production environment (unfortunately those scripts are not open source at the moment because they have some information private to our setup in it).

Please submit change requests for anything you learn on the production install!

Also, make sure you're installing from the right requirements file. I don't think we support django 1.8 yet.

Hi Tamira,

If it's any help, I recently installed CommCareHQ with developer setup on Ubuntu 14.04. I followed the README, and didn't use the install script. I found very few differences between the docs and what I needed to do. Here are a couple of tips:

1. When creating the CouchDB user, use the CouchDB web interface, not the command line. The requests made from the command line didn't work for me.
2. In Ubuntu there were two packages I found I needed to install that the README didn't mention. (I'll update the README shortly):
1. libxml2-dev
2. libxslt1-dev
3. Install both requirements and dev-requirements:
   $ pip install --download-cache pip_cache -r requirements/requirements.txt
   $ pip install --download-cache pip_cache -r requirements/dev-requirements.txt
   

Considering you've already got "./manage.py runserver" working, you've probably done these things already, but in case you missed any of that, I hope it helps.
