One node should be enough (unless it's really, really, really small).
1M messages/day is just 10-15 messages/s, which is practically no load
for CometD (depends on the user logic, but typically if it is just
text chatting 15 messages/s is a very light load).
5k users is also a small number, which yields that on average a user
will send about 10 messages/hour, something that could be easily
handled by just one NIO selector on the server.
We have a customer with 1 (large) server running 150k users and 50k
messages/s, just to give you a reference.
