Just like the national-level organizers' thread ...

This is the Introductions thread. New members are invited to introduce themselves. A brief format is suggested.

Name
How long you've been in Tulsa
Occupation and/or Affiliations
Something you want to get from the forum or something you want to get done in Tulsa

Anything else you want to add but don't write a book. There's plenty of time to get to know one another.

I'll start:

Hi.
Luke Crouch
Born-and-raised for 31 years
Web Developer for Mozilla
I want to help build and grow a civic technology group that makes visible positive impacts in our community

I'm Suzy Oliver.

I work for myself at Megaritz Software. I am trying to write my own mobile apps, but that's not going very well (it's really easy for that kind of job to get put on the back burner, and my life has been incredibly stressfully the past year and a half with aging parents and my being the oldest child and the only one in the Tulsa area full-time), so I am tutoring ACT/SAT and practically all subjects, but mostly math and computer science for middle school through college. I was also teaching math and computer science at TCC as an adjunct professor but enrollment's down, so, this semester, I am not teaching there.  I am checking out other possibilities with working for companies as a software developer.

I worked as a programmer for 14 years, then homeschooled my autistic son for a number of years, then nobody would hire me after that gap in programming even though I went back to school and worked on a Mobile Development degree from TCC, which I finished last May. I worked at Aviation Simulation Technologies for 6 months recently doing C++ and flying simulators; it was the most fun I've ever had working, but they went under I'm not that good with web sites yet, though I've taken all the classes on HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. What I excel at is solving almost any kind of algorithm and turning it into code. I've done years of C and C++, and I feel very comfortable with C# and Objective C.

I would just like to help out and do something for Tulsa, which has been my home all of my adult life. (I was born in Temple, Texas, near Killeen and Waco, and grew up in Borger, Texas, near Amarillo.)

My name is Tom White, I've lived in Oklahoma all my life but moved to Tulsa in 1999.

I'm a software developer, mostly database and business applications. I've done some web work mostly in PHP, but after reading some messages here I am learning Django by doing a small project. I currently work at a trucking company where I'm migrating some systems to PostGIS, which was new to me two years ago but I'm starting to like it. I used to volunteer as an EMT and did some mapping involved with that, map books and the like. I also have website focused on crowd-sourced amateur radio GIS data, but it needs some TLC that I've been unable to provide.

I'm intrigued by the idea of using public data to make Tulsa better. I saw a thread on reddit asking for the best place to live in Tulsa and thought that would be a great place to start - publish some maps comparing crime rates to build starts and maybe property values, school ratings and so on.

I currently have 2 year old triplets, and my wife is not in great health, and so I don't have a lot of time right now to get out and go places. But I'm extremely interested in this project and would like to keep up with what is going on so that when I do have some spare time in a couple of years I would be able to play a more active role.

Graphic Designer for CAP Tulsa (http://captulsa.org/) and I own a design / branding company, and a sci-fi/fantasy publishing company (http://www.auryncreative.com/).  I am also president of TulsaNow (http://tulsanow.org/) an advocacy group for smarter land-use and transportation policy.

I like connecting dots.  I'm interested in programmers & creative folks getting more involved in local government, and introducing gov. organizations such as the Economic Development Commission, the Planning Department, INCOG, the Transportation Advisory Board, etc. to tools that allow for more civic engagement and input.  Government works best when it is of, by, and for the people.

Hey Guys!

I'm Josef Green.
Born in Tucson Az.
I'm 26.
Served four years in the Navy as an IT.
Served 3 in the USAF Reserves as a 3D152.
Serving in the Oklahoma ANG with the 146th ASOS out of Will Roger's ANG Base.
Prior DO for Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.
Currently doing Physical and Cyber security for Department of Energy's Southwest Power Administratioin, Downtown Tulsa.

I help out with The Demand Project. It's a local group, pretty new, that works with local and state law enforcement to fight the sexual exploitation of minors as well as all human trafficking. They've tasked me with looking into helping research for their workshops for parents to help them become more tech savvy and protect their children on the internet, video games, phone security, etc. and limit their exposure to predators. They've also tasked me with basically looking into creating their batcave. They mentioned interest in finding companies that are willing to donate their old workstations, etc to non profits. They have a proprietary program used to keep track of their numbers, rescued victims' information, rates of impact, etc. They also want to expand their network transnational. I know Office 365 is free for non profits and that could possibly be useful for that end. Seeing as how the majority of my IT skills have been from OJT in the military, I figure there are better minds than my own out there. I'm hoping to meet someone interested in pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks for allowing me into your group!

Hi Keith, welcome! Thanks for joining the Meetup too - please come meet folks at any of the meetups.

You may have noticed there's an all-weekend meetup for CodeAcross 2015. [1] We're organizing some projects and a venue, but it will be a great way to see what Code for Tulsa is all about, so mark it on your calendar if you can!

My name is Ted Ward, I grew up in Claremore and moved back to Tulsa in 2002 from Denver where I worked as a Java developer. Since then I've been teaching programming and security at OSUIT and now TCC. I have experience with many programming languages. I like web development, mobile and low level programming/hardware hacking. I have a few open source programs on SourceForge (AstroGrep, OSU Quiz).

I want to collaborate/contribute knowledge, ideas, and effort wherever I can to help foster a hacking and technical culture in Tulsa. I enjoy technology and believe a strong technological foundation will lead to a brighter future. I have various ideas and even some partially completed code for projects that I think could be fun or useful for a wider audience, but I am not the most focused person you will ever meet...

Welcome Ted! Thanks for introducing yourself! If you haven't joined the Meetup yet, be sure to join so you'll get notifications of our meetups:

Sounds like you would also like Tulsa Web Devs if you haven't joined it already?

http://www.linkedin.com/groups/Tulsa-Web-Devs-4064077

We need a better intro page, but for now, here's our current "roadmap" of projects ...

* Crow Creek Community
We're working with Blue Thumb OK [1] to build up http://savecrowcreek.org/ to connect crow creek residents with lawn-care providers who will offer "Blue Thumb Approved" lawn-care services to minimize impact on the Crow Creek watershed. We're also working on turning Blue Thumb's clipboard-style data collection into a mobile web app.

* What Works Cities
We're working with City of Tulsa IT department and other departments on using data to measure and improve city services. [2] We've had a couple of really good meetings and design sessions involving city IT, Fire, and Police departments to identify problems, design solutions, and learn what data sets are required to implement the solutions. This will lead into our CodeAcross 2016 event in February, where we plan to form teams to work on some of the projects we've designed. I need to publish that list and get it online soon.

Everyone's pretty much in holiday mode right now, though we plan to start up again in earnest in January, so please join the groups to stay involved as things get going again in 2016.

Again, welcome!

Hey Keith,

No problem on reaching out! I think the point is for us to talk to each other and learn :)

We used WebApi 2 for the two applications I helped build (as well as SignalR for real-time data updates). H&P is a heavy .NET shop that is starting to get into web development so we are using what we know and adding in new and exciting things.

Don't hesitate to ask more questions if you have them!

Oh. WebAPI... Must be nice😀 we are serving off 2005 with ASP.NET 2.0. We can use 3.5 since it is still actually a 2.0 base,  but 4.0 while installed,  does not play nice with IIS 6, or SSRS 2005.

I'm guessing some sort of legacy system? SQL Server 2005 support ends April 12th, so it may be beneficial to start looking to migrate to the newer stuff. 4.0 won't be enough unfortunately since Microsoft ended support with 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5.1 earlier this year.
