I'm starting a civic book club to read and discuss interesting civic books and articles.

Our first meeting will be in late September and our book will be Post-Broadcast Democracy: How Media Choice Increases Inequality in Political Involvement and Polarizes Elections by Markus Prior.

Based off interest, we'll have options to meet in-person as well as through a Google Hangout. Please comment if you're interested in participating or hosting a regional meeting!

I'm interested in joining, although can't really participate until September.  Although less academic,"  I'd also love to read/discuss some of the books on hopefulness -- Mary Pipher's Green Boat, Joanna Macey's "Active Hope"  or even some of Rebecca Solnit's essays...

For hope-related work, please consider Rich Harwood's "Work of Hope"  http://workofhope.theharwoodinstitute.org/

Dear Leanne and other colleagues of the 2013 cohort,

Kind regards from the Netherlands. I have still good memories about the 2010 summer school.

Leanne, thank you for the reference. I read Harwood’s  book while holidaying in France; very inspiring.

Kind regards,

Fons

Kim and Leanne, thanks for the great reading suggestions!

To make this a book club discussion, you should go ahead and selected a date and time that works for you and announce it to the group.

This is a collaborative book club, so...you are now in charge! If you need any help setting up a Google Hangout or managing the technical piece of it, I'd be happy to help with that.

Whatever time you choose, I'll be there! I look forward to discussing these books with you.

Best,
Sarah

Hi Bill,
You can RSVP to the Google Hangout discussion by visiting the calendar page: http://civicstudies.org/calendar

The first book club discussion is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3pm EST, and the book is Post-Broadcast Democracy by Markus Prior.

It would be great if folks could RSVP in advance so we know how many people to expect. There is a cap on how many people a Google Hangout can accommodate, so depending on interest we may hold more than one Google Hangout session.

I look forward to "meeting" you at book club!

Best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Something has come up for me this Saturday, so I probably can't make the 3pm meeting -- by the way is it 3pm Eastern time?

thanks, I am enjoying the book.

Bill

Bill,
Sorry to hear you can't make it, but glad to hear you're enjoying the book.

For anyone else interested in participating in our first Civic Book Club discussion, it is at 3pm Eastern on this coming Saturday, September 28. The link to participate is here:
https://plus.google.com/events/cqivcrd10591ludqfobi0u03oag

We'll be discussing Post-Broadcast Democracy by Markus Prior, which explores the impact of media environment has on democratic participation. The discussion is open to anyone interested in this topic - it's okay if you haven't read/finished reading the book. (Though the book is really interesting, so it's worth reading).

I'm looking forward to an engaging discussion!

Best,
Sarah

Sarah, I am sorry to cancel at the last moment. I am doing shutdown prep in light of political failures so far.

As a former broadcast journalist and long-term government worker, I applaud this study effort.

Hi Sarah,

Although I could not make the book discussion  I am curious about the discussion. There was much that I liked about the book, but it struck me that his historical example, the brief period when the dissemination of a new technology structured individual choice to increase equality of political knowledge, was extraordinary and will be impossible to repeat.   To address political inequality will require increasing motivation to engage politically.   And I don't see much value to his focus on news content and "content preferences".  I was put off by his labeling of the disengaged as "entertainment fans".

Anyway, I was wondering if there was a transcript of the discussion.

cheers!

Bill
