Dear Vidvans,

There is a version of the story behind the origin of Bodhayana amavasya in the Mahabharat where Sahadev gives Duryodhana the day of amavasya as the right muhurta for aja bali before starting the war.

Krishna plays a trick by forcing the deities of the Sun and Moon to come together one day before the date of actual amavasya.

Is there any reliable textual source in the Mahabharata that actually mentions this episode?

If so, please do share the textual source along with reference.

Thanks.

Venkat

Another question which is a corollary to the previous one. The ideal time for the Amavasya tarpana is between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. But in no Bodhayana amavasya day the amavasya tithi begins around this time. If at all it may begin around 5 p.m. When such is the case what is the rationale behind having Bodhayana amavasya at all?

Sri Venkat Veeraraghavan-ji,

There is a scholar who worked extensively on all the astronomical 'events' in Mahabharata. I referred your question to him.

I will forward his answer to you as soon as he sends it to me.

Regards,

The scholar to whom I forwarded the question replied as follows:

Dear Nagaraj ji

I have not come across this episode or even allusion to it among any of the Mahabharata MSS I have come across (BORI Critical, Southern edition, Gita Press Edition, Chitrashala edition)

Hope this helps,

Warm regards,

Nilesh Oak

Oh Thanks Shri Nagaraj garu.

Someone told me that this episode appears in Ek math Bhagvat in Marathi and in certain Tamil versions of the epic.

I was hoping to see if these were backed by the original version of the MB by Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa.
