Hi everyone - When I install WinBugsXLA, I get the following error message:

Compile error in hidden module: BrowseForFolder.
This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the
version, platform, or architecture of this application.  Click "Help" for
information on how to correct this error.

Clicking 'help' does not provide help - so thanks for your help!  And if it helps, I'm running Win7 64bit and Office (Excel) 2013

Hi everyone - the solution is simple, though it took a while to figure out: Simply install BugsXLA and WinBUGS in separate folders in the root directory of your hard drive.  Then it runs with no problem!  Best - Fred

Hello Fred,

I'm running into the same problem, though I believe BugsXLA and WinBUGS are already in separate folders in my root directors per your solution.

BugsXLA is located in C:\WinBugsXLA50.

WinBUGS is located in C:\Program Files.

Any more tips you could give me to solve this problem?

Hi. I am getting this same error message. I tried putting the BugsXLA and WinBUGS in separate folders of the root directory, but it didn't work. Any other advise?

I'm getting exactly the same issue, and Fred's fix hasn't worked for me either.  Any suggestions?

Simon - sorry, but we gave up on this a long time ago. We couldn't even get the program to load. At the end of the day, it was just more efficient to get a firm to do the work.

Good luck.

Hi, I am sorry you are getting this error.  Although this doesn't actually matter regards getting BugsXLA to work for you, this is an Excel problem not a BugsXLA specific problem.  The BrowseForFolder routine that is causing your issue was lifted from the web and works for the vast majority of users.  I Googled the issue and found a couple of sites that offer possible solutions.  I show the links below and if you try them and they work please post a response.  Else I will continue to explore other possible solutions (and you may want to search the web for other solutions as this is not a BugsXLA unique problem).  It is difficult for me to resolve as I cannot reproduce the problem on my PC.

Hi, I have met the same trouble , too. microsoft office 2003\2007\2010\2013\2016 have different version of visual basic for Application (VBA). the .xla edited by one version of VBA maybe meet some troubles in  another one. (In my PC: visual basic for application 7.1 version 1049; windows 10;MS office 2016). So, which version of VBA do you used?  or , some further advice?

thanks

I've just tried to install it on Win 8 64 bit system with Excel 2010.  Tried the separate folders thing and the 2 links in Phil Woodward's recent email.  Still getting the error.  Had to remove the add in, but I can still see the excel sheets he had as examples, and those help!

I am having the same issue, haven't been able to resolve it with the solutions suggested. I'm running 64 bit windows 10 with Excel 2016.  Has anyone found a solution to this?

Its easy enough to run BUGS through R, but colleagues all use excel.

I have implemented what I hope is a solution to this problem. Version 6.1 is now provided for download as it should fix the program failure when 64bit MS software is being used eg 'Compile error in hidden module: BrowseForFolder' (solution provided by Xie Shaoming).  I would be very grateful if someone who suffered this issue would download the new version and let me and the group know if this works.
