Hi  Gonçalo ,

I recently updated Bonsai through the Editor. Then I found it did not start. Later, I reinstalled Bonsai throught the installer. It worked at the begining and I managed to install all the packages I need. However, when I try to run my workflow, it just crushed for no reason. No error message pop up. Just all window closed.

I have reinstalled for several times, and restarted the computer. It still crushed when I try to run a workflow, even for just one source node in the workflow, it crushed.

Could you please let me know how to fix this issue?  I am using WIN10 in my computer. Does it look like a compatibility issue?

Thank you very much!

Best,
Jingyu

Hi Jingyu and Gonacalo,
I have a similar problem. I updated the packages yesterday, and now Bonsai will not open. I'm running Bonsai64 on a Win 7. The error message says, "Bonsai64 has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program." The only option I'm offered in the dialog box is "close the program."

Thank you for your help!
Sarah

Hi Jingyu and Sarah,

From Bonsai 2.5.0 the bootstrapper should not be updated directly from the editor, but rather from the website. I've unlisted the package to prevent others from having the same problems.

To fix your installations, you should follow the steps here:

Hope this helps.

Hi  Gonacalo,

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, I have tried the reinstallation as you suggested. And deleted the folders and reinstalled the packages. The Bonsai software can be opened with no problem. But, it still stopped running when I hit the start for the workflow and crushed, all windows closed like it has never been started.
I have no idea what the problem is since no error message pop up.

Thanks,
Jingyu

Hi Jingyu,

Thanks for the feedback, that is strange. Let's try to see if we can figure out some more information. Can you do the following:
  1. Download the portable version of Bonsai: https://github.com/bonsai-rx/bonsai/releases/download/2.5.1/Bonsai.zip
  2. Unzip the package into a new folder somewhere in your computer (not in the original install folder)
  3. Open a command-prompt: Start Menu > Command Prompt
  4. cd <directory>
  5. Run Bonsai64.exe from the command prompt
  6. Try to insert a Timer node from the toolbox, and hit the play button

It should start the bonsai editor after downloading the packages, and then even if it crashes suddenly you should see an error breakdown. If you do, can you paste a screenshot?

Hope this helps.

Hi  Gonacalo,

Thanks for your quick response! I managed to follow your instruction until I insert the timer node, and it could not start when I hit the play button, no response at all. But, no crash this time.  So, no error message.

Thanks,
Jingyu

Hi Jingyu,

It might not have crashed actually. The default timer has a DueTime of zero seconds, so the workflow would just start and stop instantaneously. If you set a periodic timer of some number of seconds you should see it count upwards.

Hi Goncalo,
I tried following the instructions here
but I cannot click on Open file locations because it is not highlighted.

I will try the second method you mentioned.

Hi Goncalo,
I got as far as step 5 but installation ran into problems.

The error message was:
"The request was aborted. Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel."
Then, this error msg dialog popped up:

Now, when I click on the Bonsai shortcut, I'm getting this message:

What should I try next?
Thank you,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

You're on Windows 7 so you suffer from another issue. I would start over and before number 5 follow the steps here:

So, I was able to go through all the steps and install. I will test the timer next.
I then closed the command prompt while installing the packages and the command prompt and Bonsai closed together.
Will I have to run Bonsai from the Command Prompt from now on, while on Windows 7?

Did you follow the steps here as I mentioned previously to clean-up your system wide install?

If you do follow these you should be able to recover your system install (don't forget to do the Windows 7 workaround you just did now too).

Oops! I sent the following reply to the wrong message! Sorry. Here it is.

No. I got stuck at Open File Location. The icon isn't active, so I can't click on it.
What should I do?

I replied to the other one too, but will repeat it here:

This means you already uninstalled Bonsai so can't recover the location this way. By default, Bonsai is installed at:

C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Bonsai

Just delete that folder and start over.
Hope this helps

Bonsai now works! Timer works too! Thank you!

Moving forward, is it okay for me to update the packages as I normally would, on Win 7?

Package updates can be done as normal. You will stop getting bootstrapper updates (the actual Bonsai install). For those releases you will have to download directly from the website, rather than update through Bonsai.

After the Bonsai 3.0 release, Win7 will no longer be supported as it is end-of-life by Microsoft and keeping support is preventing us from moving cross-platform (this will happen only at some point next year).

Got it!
It sounds like switching to Win 10 is the way to go to make sure everything works smoothly in the long-run!
Thank you!
