Quicksilver should now fully support tags in Mavericks. You can:

  • Select one or more files and add/remove tags
  • Select one or more existing tags and apply to one or more files
  • See the tags assigned to a file
  • See the files that have a particular tag
  • Add files to the catalog based on tags (no more indexing entire folders to get one or two files)

This functionality has been added to the File Attribute Plugin (formerly known as “File Attribute Actions”).

The updated plug-in requires Quicksilver 1.2.0, which is currently only available as a developer preview and has some known issues.

Technically, there’s no reason the new plug-in won’t work with 1.1.3 as long as you’re on 10.9. So if you can’t wait, you’ll need to download and install this special build manually. (You should just need to unzip it and double-click.)

Thanks, Rob!

Tthe Spotlight plugin has provided "tagging" (meaning manipulation of tokenized Spotlight comments) for some time. In Quicksilver's interface, this is referred to as tagging, including a Tags entry in the sidebar of the general preferences where the user can set a prefix to attach to the front of said Spotlight comment "tags".

So, to avoid confusion with the new Mavericks tags, I suggest that the Spotlight plugin should be modified so that its "tags" are referred to as comments instead of tags in the UI.

Yeah, that occurred to me. Just haven’t gotten to it yet.

I was just going to remove tag and comment stuff from the Spotlight
plug-in altogether. Can you even do comments on 10.9? It doesn’t look
like it from the Finder UI.

Very cool!  I have been anxiously waiting for this update.  Any sense of when the latest developer preview will be promoted to production?

There were some bing changes ‘under the hood’ in the latest update (ARC support), and there are quite a few ‘known bugs’ that need ironing out, so I’d say you’re probably talking weeks to months - sorry!
Of course, you could test the dev preview version if you like (just be sure to back up your settings/QS files first!)

Spotlight comments are still there and editable via the Info window. The only difference is that the Comments field has now moved down in between the Name & Extension section and the Open With section in the Info window and is no longer highlighted in blue to make it stand out.

It is true that the pseudo-tagging system is obsolete now. But you probably want to leave it in for the sake of users who invested a lot in it in the past. They would understandably be unhappy if functionality they have relied on for years suddenly went away. Or at the very least, don't remove the functionality without also offering a means to upgrade by copying all Quicksilver's pseudo-tags over into real Mavericks tags first. But probably the best and easiest thing is simply to rename the old functionality and otherwise keep it in place.

Ah, I see it.

I like to tag my applications by type. But this plugin won't successfully tag any apps downloaded from the App Store. Is there a way that possibility can be implemented—perhaps by allowing authentication when necessary?

You can’t tag anything that isn’t owned by your user account. Since
Finder won’t let you do that either, I don’t feel like this is a
Quicksilver issue.

Changing the ownership of the applications should allow you to tag them.
(You can change them all with one Terminal command.) I’m not sure what
impact that might have the next time an update for an app is published.
My guess is “none”, but it’s something to keep in mind.

Thanks, Rob. I’ve manually changed ownership for an app store app before and I’m pretty sure it still updated fine.

What would a terminal command be for changing ownership for all apps in /Applications?

I didn’t want to be responsible for that, but since you asked…

sudo chown -R $USER /Applications

Again, I wouldn’t expect that to cause any problems, but I’d make sure you have a backup first.

Thanks, Rob. I appreciate it and won’t hold you responsible for any mayhem that ensues. :)
