QS is making windows in Mac act erratically

Hi guys,

When QS is running, focusing on applications becomes a challenge, even when I'm trying to focus on the QS preferences window.  I don't know why, but when I quit, the focus on apps is no longer a problem.  Anyone know why that is?  Thanks for the consideration.

What *does* get focus when this happens? Is Quicksilver constantly coming to the front?

Do you have any Event Triggers defined?

Is there a cat standing on your keyboard?

hahahaha! - can't be a cat - I googled images of 'cat on keyboard' and it seems they're only interested in PCs.

I'm not what is being focused and I don't know how or whether QS is coming to the front because I have it set to appear with cmd+space in the menubar.  But when I quit QS the erratic switching between apps stops.  And unless I have turned into a cat, there's nothing other than my paws, er I mean, fingers are typing on my keyboard.

I first thought it was an issue with Alfred, because when I was calling up Alfred with its hotkey it would act erratically.  I made a screencast of it yesterday to illustrate (link).  But once someone on IRC recommended I quit QS, Alfred's bezel then remained onscreen and clicking and focusing on other windowed apps were no longer a problem (the guy thought Alfred's bezel was QS).

Currently everything's working fine.  Once my Mac starts acting schizo again, I'll do another screencast.

As for Event Triggers, here's a screenshot of what I got under custom triggers.  I don't know if I have created any event triggers or how to search for them.

OK. Maybe see if there’s anything on the Console too.

The type is shown in the column under “⌘”. All of those are Hotkey triggers.

Will do!

Then I've got no Event Triggers in any of the other categories.

Could it be a problem between Alfred and QS' position in window stack? I recall momentarily having focus problems with QS and iTerm2 running as an agent and a returnFocus method logged by the latter.

Hi all,

I'm replying to this thread because I have been able to at least center on the issue.  For some reason, after activating QS, my Mac goes into single-app mode.  Single-app mode makes all other apps hide when the selected app is focused.  For a better explanation and manual enabling/disabling of it, visit this link: http://zackshapiro.com/post/26300586593/single-application-mode-my-favorite-hidden-feature-of

Now, each time I quit QS, this single-app mode gets 'disabled.'  But when I open QS and then activate it, single-app mode becomes 'enabled.'  I still haven't figured out how QS specifically causes this.  Any consideration is appreciated.

Thanks,
Afshin

And now I'm replying again because I forgot the check the preferences after realizing the issue: I disabled 'hide other applications when switching applications'.  On one hand I feel I should hide my head in shame for not realizing this sooner.  On another I feel so glad that I no longer have to deal with this issue.

I figured, but it looks like you found it before I could reply. :-)

It seems like anyone who wants this behavior would want it globally, not just when switching via Quicksilver. So I wonder why it was ever even added to Extras. Should we remove it? Am I missing something?

Huh ? IIRC, it is global, it uses the "Process Changed" notifications to hide and show things accordingly so it doesn't matter how the switch was triggered. I'd say even "Reveal" from various apps ought to work, but obviously it might not be an often used feature...

E.g., 'Hide other applications…' feature in QS works with the application switcher, single application mode seems only to work when clicking an icon in the Dock — in OS X 10.8.3. Check this article.
