This evening I'm not able to apt-get BBB - Broken packages.
Yesterday was working fine.

ubuntu@ip-10-194-191-113:~$ sudo apt-get install bigbluebutton
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
bigbluebutton: Depends: bbb-config but it is not going to be
installed
E: Broken packages

Anyone else is this issue?

Hi Joe,

Are you sure you've added the multiverse archive? From the
instructions the command is

echo "deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid multiverse" |
sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

Many VPS sites give you a Ubuntu server with a very minimal
/etc/apt/sources.list. If you don't have the multiverse, the
ttf-mscorefonts-installer package will not be found, which will break
the dependency.

Can you double-check you've done all the steps in

http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/InstallationUbuntu#Installation_of_BigBlueButton_0.71a

If so, let us know, and we'll figure out why it's not installing for you.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Fred,

I am having the same issue as Joe. I have a dedicated server. I
followed instructions as stated and still receive the same error. Any
suggestions?

I'm trying out the installs here. Nothing has changed in our package
repository for over a week; I suspect one of the external packages we
depend is having problems. Can you try

sudo apt-get install bbb-config

and let us know the output.

OK, can you keep going down the dependencies.

sudo apt-get install bbb-web

and

sudo apt-get install bbb-client

If they report other packages are broken, keep drilling down until you
get to a package that returns an error.

Hmm ... the package msttcorefonts has been replaced by
ttf-mscorefonts-installer, and ttf-mscorefonts-installer has been
recently updated.

We're doing more investigation here at our end. I'll post again
shortly when we figure out what's changed.

Ok, just got through a clean install of BigBlueButton 0.71a on Ubuntu
10.04 32-bit, so there should be a way to fix this.

Can you try doing this first:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

then try installing BigBlueButton again.

First, thanks to Darrell for allowing me access to his computer. We
figured out the problem.

On his new dedicated server, the hosting provider had commented out by
default the following entries in /etc/apt/sources.list

## review or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
# deb http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid universe
# deb-src http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid universe
# deb http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid-updates universe
# deb-src http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid-updates universe

(Notice here that iweb is providing it's own mirrors, but the URLs are
very similar in a standard install.)

This meant that the two packages: cabextract and openoffice.org were
not installable. After we uncommented the following entries:

## review or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid universe
# deb-src http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid universe
deb http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid-updates universe
# deb-src http://ubuntu.mirror.iweb.com/ lucid-updates universe

and ran

sudo apt-get update

We were able to install bigbluebutton.

Regards,... Fred

I did what you suggest in other posts but noting.

Also, I used the sudo apt-get install command with all dependencie until I found this error with one of them:

I am stuck here, please anyone can help me?

Hi Marcos.
Looks like you user using an Ubuntu 10.04 server (distribution code-name was lucid).  The last version that worked on that was 0.81 -- a very old version of BigBlueButton.

Is it an option for you to setup a new Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit (xenial) server and install BigBlueButton 2.0-beta, see

Hello Fred,

How is that possible? I am under 16.04 version:

root@cl-t072-256cl:~# cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS"

Maybe I need to reinstall the whole server?

Thanks

Hi Marcos,

Can you do the command

  sudo apt-get update

and let us know if you get the error

If so, your sources.lit is incorrect -- it should not have any references to lucid.

Hi Marcos,

Note the errors you are getting in the `sudo apt-get update` -- this is likely the cause for packages not installing.  Remove the references to lucid, ensure you have a reference to the multiverse, see

and try installing havaged again.

Try to install bbb-config on its own and it might show you what is wrong.

apt-get install bbb-config

Hello Chad!

I did what you suggest and followed all the dependencies messages from all this packages:

sudo apt-get install bbb-config
sudo apt-get install bbb-web
sudo apt-get install bbb-libreoffice
sudo apt-get install libreoffice
and that led me to:

Hello Fred!

I Just bought the service from iweb. I think it is a fresh and clean installation.

You think that could be a Good idea to ask them to reinstall it?

Hi Marcos,

Thanks for giving us a quick look at your server.  The problem was your sources.list had the urls for the multiverse and universe commented out.  This prevented apt-get from finding the libreoffice packages.

After editing the sources.list and uncommenting the references to multiverse and universe, libreoffice was able to install.

Regards,... Fred

Hi Clem,

In the future, can you start a new thread (this one is related to apt-get install packages).

Can you post the output of

  sudo bbb-conf --check

You're trying to run BBB with 1GB of RAM. I'm kind of surprised that anything works. The recommended minimum amount of RAM is 4GB (it's in the install docs and at the end of that --check output).

yes yes, before installing it on my server,
I installed a virtual ubuntu server with a ram of 1 GB and everything works perfectly,
no need to restart the service every time

Hi everyone,

>  I installed a virtual ubuntu server with a ram of 1 GB and everything works perfectly,

For the benefit of everyone reading this, BigBlueButton requires 4G (minimum) to run.  It will not work in 1G.

> I am forced to always restart the service with bbb - conf restart for my sevice works again
> I need your help

Yes, the reason you have to restart is that your server does not have sufficient memory to run all the processes for BigBlueButton.  The result, it will fail in non-predictable ways, as you are encountering.

You *must* provide (at least) 4G of memory to run BigBlueButton.

Regards,... Fred
