Show bbb recordings only to moodle users

We were shocked to discover that the BBB recordings have to be publicly available in order to be displayed in Moodle. This is a very big privacy gap and thus a huge problem for us. What do we need to do to make the recordings only viewable by logged in Moodle users who have access to the appropriate course?

Hi Andrea,

The recording links generated by BigBlueButton are static links and are sharable within and outside of Moodle.   Are you running your own BigBlueButton server?

There are options to make your recording links more restrictive.  

1.  If you run ScaleLIte, you can enable protected recording links.  See

2.  There are companies that provide commercial support for BigBlueButton that also provide the option of generating more restrictive recording links.  See

Hello Fred, thanks for your response. We are having a really small moodle instance with only around 70 users. For this small amount running our own bbb server would be too expensive. Therefore, we are using a bbb hosting provider. When I did the research for a suitable bbb provider I also checked out the ones on the bbb webpage but there are unfortunately way to expensive. Our budget for bbb is a max of 20USD per month. So for our setting there is no way to restrict the access to the recordings?

Hi Andrea,

you always can record the browser window locally - or generate mp4 files from bbb recordings after the sessions.

These files you can provide within moodle protected.

Maybe this would be a solution for protected recording links while still using a bbb hoster, that does not offer it?
