Hello,

I tried to test bigbluebutton at http://mconf.org/m/.

While I share my Web-camera it uses only Upload bandwidth and no Download.

But if I share my desktop why it Downloads(from Network Monitor) at (200 kbps to 1 Mbps) ?

Desktop sharing should work as webcam sharing, ie only upload and not download.

It would be better to have an option to disable the view of "Desktop sharing: presenters preview", which may be the root cause of 200 kbps to 1 Mbps downloading when we share our desktop.

Please let us know what is the root cause of this issue so that I can retest and confirm that even when my desktop is shared only Upload bandwidth is consumed instead of Download bandwidth as it is happening when I share my Webcam.

Thanks,
Kiran.

Hi Kiran,

On mconf.org users don't test BigBlueButton, but Mconf-Live, a fork of BigBlueButton. If you want to discuss issues of Mconf-Live, I'd like to invite you to do so in the proper mailing list (https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/mconf-dev).

If it's an issue on Mconf-Live and you think it also affects BigBlueButton, I would like to invite you to check against the BigBlueButton demo servers (http://demo.bigbluebutton.org and http://dev081.bigbluebutton.org). In case you confirm that, then you will probably find the answer asking in this forum - the BigBlueButton core developers and the community provide an awesome support :)

Regards,

Hi,

I tried to test bbb on http://dev081.bigbluebutton.org and it does not contain "Network Monitor" feature to see the Bandwidth usage.

I used speedometer(http://excess.org/speedometer/) in my linux machine and now it shows max of 100 KiB Rx Bandwidth on sharing Desktop, which is nice.

Please let me know my verification method is correct and new dev081 version consumes Rx Bandwidth of 100 to 120 KiB if I share my Desktop.

Also is there a way to reduce further bandwidth to less than 50 KiB, since we have low Upload and Download bandwidth here ?

Thanks,
Kiran.

What you're seeing is the expected behaviour of BBB deskshare. The screen capture portion of deskshare is a java applet so in order to get a local version of the stream you're sharing you need to subscribe to the stream within Flash because you can't get a local version otherwise. On the other hand for webcam sharing, everything is contained within Flash so you can create a local copy of your webcam and display it in the video dock.

You could submit a feature request here, http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/issues/list for your suggestion of giving an option to disable the stream preview. It is important to remember though that the stream you're subscribing to is the exact same thing that the other people in the meeting see. If you're having issues downloading a stream of that size your other users might to.
