I am considering switching to an all-chain rode on my 311 and am wondering if other owners of similar sized boats have done this? In particular, I'm curious what size chain you went for, and if you added a windlass, or already had one.

I know chain/rode/anchor stuff is very personal and sometimes controversial, but mostly interested in similar boats and what they have chosen and had the best results with.

I'm considering adding a Lewmar v700 windlass and 300' of 1/4" chain. By my calculations that is about 220 pounds of additional weight in the bow that I don't have now. I'm not worried about the power usage or wiring, as I am very versed in that area and have plenty of capacity.

Any opinions on similar sized boats appreciated!

I’m also curious about this. I’ve been thinking about doing something similar for my 31.

It rides a little low in the rear (all the tankage is in the keel. I think it’s balanced with the optional forward water tank in mind. More chain up front might be a good thing.

I’ve currently got a Fortress FX16 with 6 ft of chain and the rest is rode. It holds great when set, but can be hard to get a good set in the first place.

I have a Beneteau 331 with 30' of 1/4" G4 chain and 250' of Rhode.  I use it with a lewar windlass and 33lb rochna.  Holds hard in a variety of anchorages. I'd go all chain if I could but it's pretty big $$ difference.  More for the resistance of the Rhode  against chaffe.

Windless is nice to have, but came with boat.  Needed a little regab to get it going, but worth it.

One thing I've been reading is that there seems to be a difference in the iron full keel and shoal when it comes to bow weight the hypothesis is that the shoal draft is heavier in nose.  Maybe take a baseline and do a test with water or some other ballast to see how it rides.

Dan,

I have the 22 lb Rocna and the same rode setup - 30’ of 1/4” G-4 and 250’ of rope. The main reason I am looking to switch to chain is chafe protection as well as for the windlass.

Which windlass do you have? A vertical or horizontal? I’ve contemplated adding one that can deal with both chain and rope but haven’t done a ton of investigation.

I have the full keel 311. She already rides a bit stern heavy but testing with water (or my fat body) are good ideas.

It's a vertical, so it's mostly concealed excepy the "winch" spindle.  Windlass handles chain and rope transition with little issue, only problem I had was feeding it the first time after a fresh splice(done by me so not too tight).  Once it got wet and was backed down on it went right through and I haven't had any issues.

Make sure you get the right gypsy for your chain and line size and you'll be good.

I've had my rode cut by another boat in a squall at Cape May, NJ,  leaving me adrift in the middle of the storm.  Chain all the way now.

Any good source for the strong chain?

You can check with

West Marine should match the price. Freight is the problem. I would go with 5/16” and try find somebody to split a drum.

I had 150 feet of 5/16” and 150’ of 5/8” 8 plait nylon rose. It fit like a glove in the anchor locker. 3 strand hocks like crazy. No comparison

A good set up.

My 2007 323 (sold as a Moorings 32.2) was factory equipped with a Lewmar windlass (model unknown but I can check). Tackle is 22 pound claw, a mix of 3/8” chain and 5/8” rope. According to sales documents it’s 50 feet of chain and 200 feet of rope, but when I practiced with the windlass last year it seemed like more chain than just 50 feet.

The chain feed in this particular installation is pretty frustrating. I can pull up about 5 feet max before there’s a pile of chain directly under the windlass, and I have to move that pile myself to keep the chain from popping off the windlass.

I do need to measure the rode segments precisely, and figure out how to get the anchor up in less than 30 minutes. I’m also not thrilled about how long it takes to get the anchor DOWN (if I’m drifting into the rocks trying to start the engine, the last thing I want to do is leave the cockpit to futz with the windlass). Those questions should be their own thread though.

I have 55m (180') of 8mm (3/8") chain on my 37' Evasion on a horizontal drum 1000w x 12v electric windlass with 20kg anchor this set up has held us firm in 40 kt plus winds with not problem I also use a 20kg chum which minimises snatch and also reduces swing in light winds in tight anchorages.

As with all chain in relatively shallow chain lockers you need to clear build up!

I mark my chain with off the shelf plastic chain markers  in 5m increments different colours and to indicate chain payed out.
