Rockrider 5.0 conversion in process

Hi all,

Just wanted to share this.
Wanted to switch my rockrider 5.0 tyres to slicks and so got a few items from Decathlon.
This is how it looks now : my rockrider 5.0, and it looks and sure rides real smooth. :)

Got the dropbar and the stem setup ready.
Next the hood brake leavers and bar-end shifters to work out the full conversion.

Too excited and so shared this. Will update after to full conversion.

RR 5.1 is 15k and RR5.0 is 9k

I had plans to put these 26x1.2 slicks on my rockrider 5.0  but the bike mechs at the decathlon store said these would not fit the stock rim. The picture you posted looks reassuring .

Hi Denzil,

I changed my RR 5.0's and my wife's Trail Lady tyres to the same ones as Pavan. I believe I am at least 10% faster, if not more. However, the shocks on the road and now felt more and it is a bit scary to drive the cycle in muddy surfaces (more skidding). On proper road, the ride is very smooth. You would have to buy tubes as well: http://www.decathlon.in/INNER-TUBES-26X1015-SCHRADER-VALVE

It was an interesting project changing the tyres, and now I am confident of fixing any puncutre on road (haven't had any punctures so far in both the new as well as old tyres).

Thanks to your post , I went ahead and changed to B'twin Slicks and appropriate inner tubes.

I completed a Bangalore to Mangalore 367km solo ride in 24 hours with the modified Rockrider 5.0 and the cycle rolled noticeably faster  . Photographs of the B'lore to M'lore ride

With slicks you need to be extra careful. You'll end up with a lot more broken spokes if you hit things too hard. Slicks won't absorb as much shock as semi-slicks and RR 5.0's box rims give away soon. You'll end up truing too frequently.

Sree is right. Spoke breakage due to slicks is a really bad theory. Unless you use tires "thinner than recommended", it really shouldn't matter whether you use slicks, semi slicks or knobbies.

Well,

I had replaced my 2" tires on my 3700D with 1" (front) and 1.3" (rear) and they held up very well for >500 kms (including a brevet). And I have ridden on some of the worst roads in and around Bangalore...

Front wheel is true as ever and rear had very slight wobble but no broken spokes! The wobble could very well have been due to the off roading that i did with my knobbies.

and BTW, 3700 has single wall rims so not super strong..

A friend broke 7 spokes on his Schwinn sporterra in a week of riding around Mathikere and campus after replacing his stock 700x35 tires with 700x26 Kenda Kontenders. A bike shop guy told him that this is the reason.

Hari, you are not alone. I was also under the wrong impression for a long time that slick = thin profile. I had a long debate (on rolling resistance, grip, etc.) based on this wrong notion. This is partly due to the shops pushing thin slick tires rather than slick 2" or slick 1.95" tires. You must try the 2" slick tires. They will roll pretty well too and in my opinion, that is the best of all unless you plan to take a lot of dirt tracks.
